For most TVs, start with Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, leave Resolution on Automatic, and check Current Video Output Signal. Automatic selects the highest resolution the connected TV supports; it does not mean every game renders internally at that resolution. For 4K/120 Hz, the game, display, HDMI connection and console output settings must all support the mode.
What PS5 graphics settings should you use?
Use these as practical starting points, then confirm what the console is actually sending and how your games behave:
- Resolution: Automatic for most setups. Choose 2160p only if you specifically want to force 4K output and have a compatible 4K screen.
- 120 Hz Output: Automatic if your TV or monitor supports 120 Hz and you play compatible games. This enables a 120 Hz video mode; it does not make every game run at 120 frames per second.
- HDR: On When Supported is a predictable default if you want HDR only for HDR-compatible games and apps. Adjust HDR to configure brightness.
- VRR: Enable it if your display supports HDMI 2.1 VRR; results depend on the display and game.
- Video Transfer Rate: Leave on Automatic unless you are troubleshooting a flickering or unstable 4K signal.
To inspect the actual connection, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and read Current Video Output Signal. Sony says the PS5 detects TV capabilities and selects the best available resolution in Automatic mode (PlayStation Support: PS5 4K resolution guide).
How should you set PS5 resolution?
Automatic or 2160p for a 4K TV
Automatic is the sensible first choice: the console detects the connected TV’s capabilities and chooses the highest supported resolution. If you need to force 4K, select 2160p under Video Output, provided the PS5 is connected to a compatible 4K screen. Check Current Video Output Signal afterward.

Console output resolution and a game’s internal rendering resolution are not the same thing. A 2160p output setting does not prove that a game is rendering every frame natively at 4K; games can use different rendering techniques and resolutions.
Using a 1440p monitor
PS5 supports 1440p output on compatible TVs and monitors. In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, select Test 1440p Output to check combinations of SDR or HDR, 60 Hz or 120 Hz, and VRR. Sony notes that results vary by TV. If the test succeeds and you want 1440p, set Resolution to 1440p. Sony also says a game with a higher native resolution, such as 4K, may benefit from improved anti-aliasing when downsampled to 1440p (PlayStation: PS5 features).

How do you get 4K at 120 Hz on PS5?
4K/120 Hz depends on the complete signal chain, not a single console switch. The display and game must support the mode, and the right HDMI port, cable, display firmware, console settings and any receiver or other intermediary must also cooperate. Sony documents 4K/120 Hz output support but warns users may encounter issues as the technology transitions across the market (PlayStation Support: PS5 4K resolution guide).
- Confirm the display and game: Check the TV or monitor manual for 4K/120 Hz support on the specific HDMI input you are using, and verify that the game supports a 120 Hz frame-rate mode.
- Update the display: Install current TV or monitor firmware.
- Use the right port and cable: Connect the PS5 to the display’s appropriate HDMI port. Start with the cable supplied with the console; if replacing it, use an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz.
- Check intermediaries: For troubleshooting, connect directly to the display or verify that a receiver or other device in the path supports the required mode.
- Check PS5 output settings: Set Resolution to Automatic or 2160p, and Video Transfer Rate to Automatic. Enable 120 Hz Output for compatible displays and games.
- Verify the signal: Return to Current Video Output Signal and check the resolution and refresh rate the PS5 is actually outputting.
The HDMI 2.1 label alone does not guarantee that every port supports every feature. Check the display’s manual for the specific input and mode.

What do the PS5 HDR settings do?
Under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, HDR offers two behaviors:
- On When Supported: HDR-compatible games and apps use HDR; unsupported content remains SDR.
- Always On: The console converts even non-HDR games and apps to HDR output.
On When Supported is a predictable compatibility choice, not a universal picture-quality rule. Choose based on your display and preference. Use Adjust HDR to set brightness and optimize HDR rendering.

What do VRR and ALLM do?
VRR
Variable refresh rate (VRR) lets a compatible display synchronize its refresh rate with the PS5’s graphical output. It requires a compatible HDMI 2.1 VRR TV or monitor, and the effect varies by display and game. Sony provides an Apply to Unsupported Games option that you can try with games that do not support VRR; turn it off if you notice unexpected behavior.
ALLM
Auto low-latency mode (ALLM) signals a compatible TV to switch to its low-latency mode during gameplay. Availability depends on the TV, so check the display manual instead of relying only on an HDMI version label. The PS5 does not send an ALLM signal while a media app is running. When VRR output is active, the display switches to low-latency mode even if ALLM is Off; to disable ALLM completely, turn VRR off too. Sony describes these behaviors in its PS5 features overview and 4K resolution guide.

What is PSSR, and does every PS5 support it?
PSSR means PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. Sony describes it as an image-quality feature for certain compatible games, not a setting used by every PS5 game. Sony’s support guide limits Enhance PSSR Image Quality to the CFI-7000 model group; it applies to certain PSSR-compatible games. If the option appears and a game behaves unexpectedly, Sony advises turning it off. The support information cited here does not establish a universal list of compatible games (PlayStation Support: PS5 4K resolution guide).
PSSR is distinct from choosing 1440p output. Sony’s 1440p feature description says downsampling a higher-native-resolution game may improve anti-aliasing on a compatible 1440p display; that does not mean PSSR is involved.
Why is my PS5 screen flickering or missing a video mode?
Try a lower Video Transfer Rate for 4K flicker
If the screen flickers at 4K, Sony suggests trying Video Transfer Rate -1 or -2 under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. These settings limit available formats, so treat them as troubleshooting rather than an image-quality upgrade, and check Current Video Output Signal after each change.
- -1: Restricts 4K 120 Hz, 4K 50/60 Hz RGB or YUV444 DeepColor, and 8K 60 Hz on the CFI-7000 model group.
- -2: Restricts 4K 120 Hz, 4K 50/60 Hz RGB or YUV444, and 8K 60 Hz on the CFI-7000 model group; 4K at 50/60 Hz uses YUV420.
If 120 Hz or 4K is not available
- Recheck whether the exact display input supports the desired resolution and refresh rate.
- Confirm the game supports the desired frame-rate mode; 120 Hz output does not force every title to run at 120 fps.
- Check that the PS5 is connected to the correct HDMI port and that any receiver or intermediary supports the mode.
- Try the included cable or a suitable Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz, then verify the Current Video Output Signal.
- If a display has video-output problems with 120 Hz games, Sony suggests turning the 120 Hz Output setting off.
Does PS5 support 8K output?
Sony documents Allow 8K Output only for consoles in the CFI-7000 model group. The documented mode requires an 8K display supporting 60 Hz and DSC, as well as games that support 8K. This is a model- and content-specific capability, not a general setting for every PS5 (PlayStation Support: PS5 4K resolution guide).

How should you compare two display modes?
When deciding between modes, compare what the console and game actually deliver rather than relying on labels alone:
Quick Recap
- The resolution and refresh rate shown in Current Video Output Signal.
- Whether the specific game supports the target frame rate.
- Whether the content is HDR or SDR and how your display handles it.
- Whether VRR works with the display and game as expected.
- Whether the cable, HDMI port and any intermediary support the mode.
- For a 1440p display, whether the tested SDR/HDR, 60/120 Hz and VRR combinations work on that particular screen.
