For one console that plays the mainline Uncharted games, choose a PlayStation 5 with a disc drive. It can play the PS4 Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection—the first three campaigns—and the native PS5 Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, which includes Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. A PS5 Digital Edition works for an all-digital library, but it cannot read PS4 discs. Neither PS5 model plays PS3 discs.
Which PlayStation consoles play the Uncharted games?
| Console | What it can play | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 with disc drive | Digital PS4 games, compatible PS4 discs, and the PS5 version of Legacy of Thieves. It cannot play PS3 discs. | Most players, especially anyone who owns PS4 discs or wants flexibility between discs and digital games. |
| PS5 Digital Edition | Digital PS4 games and the PS5 version of Legacy of Thieves. It cannot play PS4 or PS3 discs. | Players committed to buying or accessing games digitally. |
| PS4 | The Nathan Drake Collection, plus PS4 versions of Uncharted 4 and The Lost Legacy. | A lower-cost route to the remastered mainline campaigns, particularly if you already own a PS4. |
| PS3 | The original PS3 releases of the earlier games, if you specifically want those versions or already own the console. | Players seeking the original PS3 releases; it is not necessary to play the first three stories because they are collected on PS4. |
Sony says the PS5 is backward compatible with the “overwhelming majority” of PS4 games, but it specifically does not support PS3 discs. Check the [PS5 backward-compatibility guidance](https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/games/ps5-backward-compatibility-games/) if you need to confirm a particular PS4 title or feature.
Which games are included in each collection?
Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection
This PS4 collection brings together the single-player campaigns of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, and Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. It is a PS4 title and is listed as playable on PS5, though some PS4 features may be unavailable. See the [PlayStation Store listing](https://store.playstation.com/en-us/product/UP9000-CUSA02320_00-UNCHARTEDTRILOGY) for the platform and compatibility details.
Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection
This PS5 collection remasters Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. It is the native PS5 option for those two games. The official [PlayStation game page](https://www.playstation.com/en-us/games/uncharted-legacy-of-thieves-collection/) lists its contents, modes, and ownership details.

Choose a PS5 edition based on your game library
Choose the disc-drive PS5 if you own PS4 discs
A disc-drive PS5 can use compatible PS4 game discs, so it is the practical choice if your Uncharted games are on disc. Confirm compatibility and any upgrade terms for the particular title before buying. The drive also gives you the option of using compatible physical games rather than relying entirely on digital purchases.
Choose the Digital Edition if your games are digital
The PS5 Digital Edition can play digital PS4 games and the PS5 collection, but it cannot read PS4 discs. If you own a qualifying PS4 disc and want the discounted digital upgrade to Legacy of Thieves, PlayStation requires that disc to be inserted whenever you download or play the PS5 version. A disc-free Digital Edition cannot use that disc-based upgrade.

PlayStation’s US page says owners of Uncharted 4, The Lost Legacy, or their digital bundle can pay an additional fee to upgrade to Legacy of Thieves. It also says PlayStation Plus members who claimed Uncharted 4 through the subscription are not eligible for the digital upgrade described there. Prices, subscription catalog access, and eligibility can vary by region and change over time; check your local PlayStation Store for current terms.
When a PS4 is the better fit
If you already own a PS4, you can play The Nathan Drake Collection, Uncharted 4, and The Lost Legacy without buying a new console. The PS4 versions cover the mainline campaigns, but the original PS4 titles’ multiplayer is not included in the Legacy of Thieves remaster. If multiplayer is important, look specifically at the PS4 release rather than assuming the PS5 collection includes it.

Do you need a special TV for the PS5 collection?
No special display is required just to play. Legacy of Thieves advertises Fidelity mode with a 30 fps target, Performance mode with a 60 fps target, and Performance+ mode with a 120 fps target at 1080p. Its listed 4K and 120 Hz modes require a compatible display; those are optional presentation modes, not prerequisites for playing the games. Check the [official game page](https://www.playstation.com/en-us/games/uncharted-legacy-of-thieves-collection/) for the mode and display details.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What this recommendation covers
This console comparison covers the mainline games and collections described above; it does not establish compatibility for every franchise release, including the Vita spin-off Uncharted: Golden Abyss. The practical choice is therefore about the mainline campaigns: PS5 with a disc drive for the broadest disc-and-digital flexibility, PS5 Digital Edition for an all-digital library, or PS4 if you already have one or want to play the PS4 collections and releases.
