Verified means a game passes Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility checks without requiring you to change settings or take extra steps to access its functionality. Playable means the game works on Deck but may need some manual setup, such as choosing a community controller layout, opening the on-screen keyboard yourself, or navigating a launcher with the touchscreen.

Neither label is a promise of identical performance in every situation. The ratings describe Valve’s compatibility review, and they can change as games, Proton, and developer support change.

Verified vs. Playable at a glance

What Valve checks Verified Playable
Setup and access Passes all checks; no configuration work is needed to access game functionality. The game functions, but may require a manual step or configuration.
Controls and input Default controls provide access to all content without first changing in-game settings; input glyphs match the active controls, and required text entry has a supported controller-friendly method. May require a different controller layout, manual keyboard access, or another workaround for input.
Launchers and warnings Does not rely on unsupported-device warnings or difficult-to-navigate launchers that disrupt the experience. May still work despite a launcher or warning that requires extra user interaction.
Performance and display Meets Valve’s default-configuration performance and Deck display criteria. May fall short of one or more seamless-experience criteria while remaining functional.

The comparison describes Valve’s rating categories, not a guarantee that every player will see the same frame rate or behavior under every setting.

What Verified means in practice

A Verified game has passed Valve’s compatibility checks. You should be able to launch it and reach its functionality using the Deck’s default controls and configuration, without first troubleshooting input, text entry, or an awkward launcher.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Valve’s current Steam Deck compatibility checklist includes a default-configuration performance threshold of 30 fps at 800p. This is a criterion for review, not a report that every game runs at that frame rate in every scene or under every player-selected setting.

The display checks also account for Deck-compatible resolution and readable interface text. At 1280×800, Valve specifies a minimum character height of 9 pixels and recommends 12 pixels.

What Playable means in practice

Playable is not another way of saying “broken.” It means the game functions on Deck, but some part of the experience may require you to intervene. Valve’s examples include selecting a community controller layout, manually bringing up the on-screen keyboard, or using the touchscreen to move through a launcher.

These are examples, not a fixed list of defects every Playable game has. Check the individual game’s rating details and be prepared for a small extra step rather than assuming the game will be unusable.

How controls, text entry, and launchers affect a rating

Controls and on-screen prompts

For Verified, the physical controls and default controller configuration must let players access all content without first changing in-game settings. On-screen button prompts should correspond to the active input method. If the game requires text entry, controller users need a supported on-screen keyboard flow or a built-in way to enter text with a controller.

A game can remain Playable if a manual workaround makes the controls usable. Valve illustrated the distinction in a March 4, 2022 announcement: a hypothetical game that shows controller prompts 99% of the time but occasionally tells players to “press F” would be Playable, not Verified. The 99% figure is part of that historical example, not a statistic about Steam games or a replacement for the current checklist.

Launchers and unsupported-device warnings

A launcher that is hard to navigate with Deck controls, or an unsupported-device warning that interrupts play, can prevent a Verified rating. If the game still functions and the obstacle can be handled manually, it may be rated Playable instead.

What the other compatibility labels mean

  • Unsupported: Valve’s review found that Proton or hardware incompatibility prevents the game from functioning on the device.
  • Unknown: The game has not completed the compatibility review process, so Steam does not have reviewed information about its Deck experience.

A label describes compatibility and affects how Steam presents a game; it does not determine whether customers can access the game on Deck.

Why a rating can change

Valve describes compatibility ratings as a snapshot in time. A rating may change if a developer adds controller support or anti-cheat compatibility, or if Valve fixes a Proton issue or adds functionality. Valve’s March 4, 2022 Steam Deck announcement explicitly cautioned that ratings change over time; use the current checklist for present-day criteria rather than treating the announcement’s examples as current requirements.

Where to find ratings and use them

Steam displays a compatibility rating for each game in your library, and you can filter library views by rating. Valve says the rating is intended to indicate the kind of experience users can expect. The badge evaluates compatibility for the game on Steam Deck; it is not a recommendation between Deck hardware configurations. Valve’s Steam Deck page lists OLED configurations separately.

When deciding whether a game suits your setup, treat Verified as the clearest sign that it should work without extra configuration, and Playable as a signal to check what manual step may be involved. If a game’s rating matters to a purchase decision, remember that the result can become outdated as the game and compatibility environment evolve.
