For a US buyer with a 4K display and several games that support PS5 Pro enhancements, PS5 Pro is the performance option; if those upgrades do not match the games you play, the standard PS5 is the better-value choice. Sony’s current recommended prices, effective April 2, 2026, are $899.99 for PS5 Pro, $649.99 for disc PS5, and $599.99 for PS5 Digital Edition. Pro enhancements are game-specific, and the Pro has no built-in disc drive.
What changes with PS5 Pro?
PS5 Pro is an upgraded version of the PS5, not a separate generation with a different game library. Sony says compatible games can combine 4K output, ray tracing, and AI-enhanced resolution through PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), with performance at 60fps or up to 120fps. Those are capabilities for compatible games—not a promise that every title will use every feature or hit the same frame rate.
Sony’s product page explicitly says that “PS5 Pro enhanced features will vary by game.” A title must support Pro enhancements to benefit from those features, so check Sony’s current PS5 Pro game and feature information for the games you actually plan to play. A result in one enhanced game is not a reliable prediction for your whole library.
Why your display matters
Sony presents the combination of Pro features for use with a 4K TV. A 4K display makes it easier to see the value of the resolution improvements Sony describes; a lower-resolution display cannot show a 4K image at its native resolution. That does not establish that every visual improvement will be equally noticeable on every television, or that Pro is unusable with another display.

If you already own a standard PS5, the key question is not simply whether your television says “4K.” It is whether the games you play have Pro enhancements and whether you value their potential image-quality or frame-rate improvements enough to pay the difference.

Storage figures are nominal built-in capacities; space available for games is lower because the system uses some storage. Sony also lists the PS5 Pro’s vertical stand as sold separately. The US prices are recommended retail prices, not a guarantee of a retailer’s current price or stock. Sony advises buyers outside the United States to check local retailers or PlayStation Direct where available.

How much more does PS5 Pro cost?
At Sony’s US recommended prices effective April 2, 2026, Pro costs $250 more than disc PS5 and $300 more than Digital Edition, before discounts or accessories. If you need physical media with Pro, add the price of the compatible disc drive to the comparison. Sony’s March 27, 2026 announcement said the increases reflected “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.”
That gap is substantial, so treat Pro’s extra storage and potential performance improvements as benefits to weigh against what you would actually use—not as automatic reasons to upgrade. Retail transaction prices can vary, and the figures above are a dated US benchmark.

Which PS5 should you choose?
Choose PS5 Pro if enhanced games are a priority
- You have a 4K display and play multiple games with documented PS5 Pro enhancements.
- You care about the potential for sharper image quality, ray tracing, or higher frame rates enough to justify the price premium.
- You want 2TB of built-in storage for a large installed library.
Pro’s features are selective, so base the decision on named games you expect to play—not on the assumption that every PS5 title will look or run differently.
Choose disc PS5 if you want lower cost and physical media
Disc PS5 costs $250 less than Pro at Sony’s current US recommended prices and includes a drive for physical PS5 and PS4 game collections on Blu-ray Disc. It is the straightforward option if you buy discs or want to use a Blu-ray collection without purchasing a separate drive.

Choose Digital Edition if you buy games digitally
Digital Edition is the least expensive listed console at $599.99, or $300 below Pro at the same US recommended prices. It has 825GB of listed storage and no included disc drive, so it is best suited to buyers who do not need physical media.
Keep your current PS5 if it already meets your needs
If your PS5 plays the games you want satisfactorily and you cannot name Pro-enhanced titles you intend to play, keeping it avoids paying a large premium for benefits you may not use. Sony’s game-by-game caveat makes this a practical value judgment, not a claim that Pro has no advantages.

What to check before upgrading
- List the games you play most. Confirm which ones have PS5 Pro enhancements using Sony’s current Pro information.
- Match the benefits to your display. Consider whether your TV can show the resolution and visual improvements you care about; Sony describes the combined Pro features for a 4K TV.
- Compare total cost. Use the relevant US recommended price, then include a compatible disc drive if you need discs and a vertical stand if you want one.
- Check your collection. Sony says Pro plays over 8,500 PS4 games, but a small number are incompatible. Game Boost improves frame rates in some games, not all.
Does PS5 Pro make sense for your games and screen?
For a 4K-TV owner who plays several enhanced games and values their potential visual or frame-rate improvements, PS5 Pro is the more capable choice. For a digital buyer seeking the lowest console price, a disc owner who wants a built-in drive, or a PS5 owner whose current games already satisfy them, the standard options offer better value. The deciding evidence is the support status of your own games and the total price you are willing to pay.
