Start by identifying where the launch fails: the game may be missing from Steam, closing when started from Steam, or failing even when opened directly in its emulator. Restart the Steam Deck fully, then follow the matching checks below. Switching between Desktop Mode and Game Mode is not a restart, and the fix depends on the failure point.
First, restart and pinpoint the failure
Restart the Steam Deck completely before changing settings. Then note which of these describes the problem:
- The game does not appear in the Steam library.
- It appears in Steam but closes immediately when launched.
- It works when opened in the emulator but not from Steam or Game Mode.
- It fails both from Steam and when opened directly in the emulator.
EmuDeck’s SteamOS troubleshooting guide treats its troubleshooting material as a work in progress, so consider the steps below documented checks—not guaranteed fixes.
If the game is missing from Steam
This usually calls for checking Steam ROM Manager (SRM) before changing emulator settings. In Desktop Mode, open SRM from the EmuDeck application, select the appropriate parser, parse your games, and choose “Add to Steam.”

Check parser settings, exclusions, and file placement
- In SRM, inspect the Exceptions list. If the game was excluded, remove the exception, save, and generate the app list again.
- Confirm that the parser for the system is enabled and that the game is in a location and file format the parser recognizes. EmuDeck’s Steam ROM Manager guide warns that subfolders or an incorrect file format can prevent detection; consult the
systeminfo.txtinformation in the relevant ROM folder. - Avoid enabling multiple parsers for the same system unless you intend to create duplicate entries. Different parsers may launch different emulators or cores.
If the Steam shortcut closes immediately
Test filenames with special characters
EmuDeck lists characters such as apostrophes, plus signs, and accented letters in a ROM filename as possible causes of a game failing to launch from Steam. If the affected filename contains one, try renaming the ROM file and rerunning SRM. This is a targeted test, not a general explanation for every failed launch.
Do not force Proton for an EmuDeck emulated game
For emulated games added through SRM, EmuDeck says Proton compatibility is unnecessary and warns against adding STEAM_COMPAT_MOUNTS to launch parameters. Remove forced compatibility settings or that parameter if you added them while troubleshooting. This guidance is about EmuDeck emulated games, not Steam games generally.

If the game also fails inside its emulator
Check the game file, firmware, and emulator-specific requirements. EmuDeck identifies corrupt, incomplete, or incorrect ROMs or BIOS files as possible causes. A transfer can be incomplete even when the game works on the device it came from.
- Confirm that the file type is supported by the emulator you are using.
- Check whether that system requires BIOS or firmware, and verify that the files are in the correct system-specific folders. EmuDeck’s ROMs and BIOS import guide gives the relevant locations and notes where files should not be placed inside an extra subfolder.
- If the transfer is complete but a file is invalid, EmuDeck points to redumping it from your own system. Its help guidance says users provide their own ROMs and BIOS; downloading commercial game or BIOS files from unofficial sources is not a safe troubleshooting recommendation.
Update the emulator and check for SteamOS-specific conflicts
EmuDeck recommends keeping emulators and system libraries up to date. Use the update route that matches how the emulator is installed:

EmuDeck notes that outdated system libraries may stop Flatpak emulators from working. An update is a maintenance check, not a promise that it will fix a particular title.
Check the Gamescope Flatpak only when relevant
EmuDeck identifies the Gamescope Flatpak, org.freedesktop.Platform.VulkanLayer.gamescope, as a possible source of crashes with Flatpak emulators installed by EmuDeck. To check whether it is present, open Konsole in Desktop Mode and run:

flatpak list
Look for that package in the output. Do not remove software simply because a game fails; first confirm the package is installed and that the symptom matches the documented issue.

EmuDeck says a space in the name of an SD card or external drive is a typical cause. Rename the volume so its name contains no spaces, then rerun EmuDeck. Its SteamOS installation guide also notes that an SD card may need to be formatted as EXT4 to be selectable during setup.

Do not format a card as a casual troubleshooting step: formatting can erase its contents. Check its current format and preserve or back up needed files before considering any destructive change.
If it works in Desktop Mode but not from Steam
That difference points toward the Steam shortcut or its launch configuration rather than proving the ROM itself is broken. Check SRM’s parser, exception list, and generated entry; test a filename with special characters if applicable; and remove any forced Proton setting or STEAM_COMPAT_MOUNTS parameter added to the emulated game. If it fails in both places, prioritize the emulator, ROM, BIOS, and storage checks instead.
When to contact support
If these checks do not resolve the issue, collect the details that distinguish a shortcut problem from an emulator or device problem. EmuDeck’s troubleshooting guidance describes using “Fetch Log File” in the EmuDeck application and provides a Steam Deck log location. Seek help through EmuDeck’s Discord or Reddit with:
- The exact game title and emulator or core.
- Your SteamOS/device context and whether the game works when launched directly in the emulator.
- Whether you launch from Game Mode, Desktop Mode, or both.
- The complete error text, if any, and relevant Steam launch options.
- Photos and the EmuDeck log.
