You can change Assist Mode during a run, and Remedy says using it does not disable trophies or achievements. Update 1.4.0 also reduced overall combat amount and intensity in Unknown Zones by 10–15%; that is an automatic patch change, not a slider you can set yourself.
Where to change combat difficulty
- Open Options.
- Select Gameplay, then Assist Mode.
- Choose a preset if you want a starting point, or adjust the individual combat controls directly.
- Try the next encounter and fine-tune the settings that still feel difficult.
Remedy’s Help Center says Assist Mode can be switched on or off at any point during gameplay. The game does not require one overall difficulty setting: its controls let you change particular parts of combat. Remedy’s Lead Gameplay Designer Sergey Mohov described the approach this way: “The idea is simple: instead of asking you to choose an overall difficulty, we let you change the specific parts of combat that aren’t working for you.” (PlayStation.Blog, September 10, 2026; Remedy Help Center)
Which Assist Mode setting should you adjust?
Match the setting to the kind of friction you are experiencing. These controls are complementary, not competing difficulty presets.

Remedy does not publish exact slider percentages or a universally ideal configuration. Change one or two relevant controls at a time, then adjust further to suit your preference. Mohov’s guidance is to reduce friction rather than stop playing when a fight becomes a wall: “But our philosophy is straightforward: if you run into a wall and the friction becomes too much, we’d much rather you adjust the rules and keep playing than put the controller down and stop.” (PlayStation.Blog)

What Update 1.4.0 changed in Unknown Zones
Remedy’s October 1, 2026 Update 1.4.0 notes report a 10–15% decrease in overall combat amount and intensity in the Unknown Zone. This is a game-wide patch adjustment; players cannot dial in that percentage through Assist Mode. Patch notes describe the change as a reduction to overall combat, not a guarantee that every encounter has the same difficulty. (Remedy on Steam, Update 1.4.0)
If fights remain difficult, check progression
The same Update 1.4.0 notes say players below an enemy’s level will have a tougher time. Remedy recommends doing side quests, exploring, and leveling before taking on harder fights. The update also added a Build Power display on the Loadout screen, making it easier to check your build’s power.

Earlier, launch hotfix 1.3.3, posted September 24, 2026, reduced the base health and required Falter level of most enemies, including the Dancer and Deserter bosses. It also increased maximum Aberrant Strength and Ability Strength. Remedy said the changes responded to early enemies feeling too tanky and combat strength not feeling powerful enough; they do not mean every fight has identical difficulty. No. Remedy’s Help Center says Assist Mode settings do not prevent trophies or achievements. You can tune combat to your needs without giving up those rewards. (Remedy Help Center)
