Give an older console clear airflow, clean its exterior gently, and follow the care instructions for its exact model. Before cleaning, switch it off and unplug it when the manufacturer says to; avoid liquids near vents and do not open the system just to remove dust. Instructions differ between generations, so use the steps below only for the models they cover.
Start with a safe routine
- Identify the exact console. Check its model name and revision, then consult the matching manufacturer manual before cleaning disc drives, removing covers, replacing batteries, or buying parts. Sony lists PS4 and PS4 Pro manuals alongside newer models in its PlayStation Manuals directory. Nintendo offers manuals for systems including Wii, Wii U, DS, 3DS, GameCube, and Game Boy Advance through its Downloadable Manuals page.
- Power down and unplug where specified. Nintendo’s handheld care guidance says to turn the system off and unplug accessories before cleaning. The cited PlayStation 5 safety guide also says to unplug the console before cleaning.
- Keep airflow clear. Place the console on a hard, smooth surface in an open area. Do not cover vents or wedge the system into a cramped space.
- Clean only the parts and in the way the model’s instructions allow. A soft, clean cloth is a sensible exterior tool, but cleaning methods and cautions are not interchangeable across generations.
Keep the console cool and ventilated
Blocked vents and enclosed spaces can impede airflow. Keep consoles off carpet and away from airborne contaminants such as smoke, oils, and air freshener where Nintendo’s guidance calls that out.
Wii
Nintendo says the Wii has an internal fan and recommends a ventilated location on a hard, smooth surface rather than carpet. Check its vents regularly; if dusty, gently clean them with a vacuum’s soft-brush attachment. Nintendo also advises avoiding smoke, oils, air freshener, and other airborne contaminants. Wii U
Nintendo recommends a ventilated hard, smooth surface and four inches of space on each side of the Wii U. Avoid carpet and airborne contaminants. For dusty vents, gently use a vacuum’s soft-brush attachment, as described in Nintendo’s Wii U dust guidance.

PlayStation 5 guidance is model-specific
The cited PS5 Safety Guide CFI-71XX says to keep vents unobstructed, avoid carpet and cramped spaces, and leave at least 10 cm between the console and a wall. It also permits a handheld vacuum to remove dust buildup. These are PS5 instructions, not verified directions for every older PlayStation; check the guide for your specific model. Clean surfaces without pushing dirt inside
For handheld Nintendo systems, Nintendo advises turning the device off, unplugging accessories, and using a soft, clean cloth—such as a lens or eyeglass cloth—for smudges. Do not pour liquid on or submerge the system, and make sure it is completely dry before use. The guidance covers Switch-family systems, 3DS, DSi, DS, and several Game Boy models. Switch has a separate, more specific cleaning procedure: lightly dampen a soft, clean cloth with water, wring it out, and wipe gently. For disinfecting Switch, Joy-Con, and accessories, Nintendo permits consumer-grade disinfectant containing about 70% alcohol, applied lightly to a soft cloth. Do not apply this procedure to other Nintendo models or other brands. Nintendo Switch cleaning and disinfecting instructions.
For the cited PS5 model, Sony says to wipe plastic surfaces with a soft, dry cloth. It warns against alcohol, paint thinner, benzene, volatile substances, insecticides, and chemically treated cloths on those surfaces. Do not spray liquid into vents or onto the console. Use model-specific vent and disc-area cleaning
Nintendo explicitly recommends a vacuum’s soft-brush attachment for dusty Wii and Wii U vents. The PS5 CFI-71XX guide recommends a handheld vacuum for dust buildup. These are manufacturer-supported methods for the stated models; they are not permission to open a console, use the same technique on every system, or blow debris deeper inside.
Nintendo’s Wii cleaning instructions treat the exterior, vents, disc tray, buttons and ports, and lens as separate areas. They say not to use liquid on vents and specify the vacuum’s lowest setting when removing crumbs from the disc tray. The page’s lens-cleaning recommendation is not complete enough to establish a method here, so check the full model-specific guidance rather than improvising. Nintendo: How Can I Clean My Wii Console?

Know when cleaning is not a repair
Cleaning and ventilation are routine care, not a guarantee against hardware failure or a promise of extra years of service. If a console still has a problem after safe exterior cleaning, consult its exact manual or seek qualified, model-specific repair guidance rather than opening it or replacing parts based on instructions for another generation.
Service availability can vary by model and region. Nintendo’s Wii cleaning page says the company no longer accepts service requests for Wii or Wii mini; that statement does not establish service availability for every older console or location. It also notes the Wii Lens Cleaning Kit is out of stock. Check current local options before deciding whether to repair or replace a system.

Switch-specific safety and power
Nintendo says not to disassemble or attempt to repair a Switch console, its components, or its battery. Keep the air vents unobstructed and use only Nintendo-licensed AC adapters when charging. If an adapter is missing or damaged, verify compatibility with the exact system before obtaining a replacement. Nintendo Switch health and safety precautions.
