From there, you can sync selected content, share files with compatible apps, back up or restore the phone, and manage updates. For ongoing wireless syncing, first set it up over cable; for automatic updates across supported devices, use iCloud.
Connect your iPhone to Windows with a cable
- Connect the iPhone to the laptop with a USB or USB-C cable that fits both devices and supports data. Check the ports on your particular iPhone and laptop; connector types vary.
- Open Apple Devices on the Windows laptop.
- Select the iPhone in the app’s sidebar. If the phone asks whether to trust the computer, tap Trust and follow any on-screen prompts.
Once selected, the iPhone’s available management and syncing options appear in Apple Devices. A cable is the starting point for discovering the phone in this workflow and for setting up Wi-Fi syncing.
Set up syncing over Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi syncing is configured after the first wired connection, rather than serving as a cable-free first-time discovery method.
- Connect the iPhone by cable and select it in Apple Devices.
- Open the General section.
- Turn on Show this [device] when on Wi-Fi, then select Apply.
- For subsequent Wi-Fi syncing, keep the iPhone and Windows laptop on the same Wi-Fi network.
Apple’s guide says the Apple device must have iOS 5 or later for this Wi-Fi-sync workflow. Wi-Fi sync enables syncing; it does not make every kind of cable-based file access available wirelessly.

Choose the connection method by task

Transfer photos from the laptop to your iPhone
Apple Devices can sync all or selected photos from a Windows photo library or an organized folder. The synced pictures appear in the iPhone’s Photos app.
- Connect the iPhone and select it in Apple Devices.
- Open Photos.
- Choose the photo source, then choose all photos or the folders you want to sync.
- Select Apply to sync.
If iCloud Photos is on, Apple Devices does not show the manual photo-sync options. Use iCloud Photos for the automatic route, or turn it off before using manual sync according to Apple’s current guidance.

Transfer files for an iPhone app
File Sharing is for documents handled by apps that support Apple’s File Sharing feature; it does not expose the iPhone as a general-purpose Windows drive. Apple’s support guidance lists the current Apple Devices app, Windows 10 or later, current iOS or iPadOS, and a File Sharing-compatible app as requirements.
- Connect the iPhone and select it in Apple Devices.
- Choose Files, then select an app in the File Sharing list.
- Add files to copy them to the app, or select and save files from the app to the Windows laptop.
Shared files are accessed through the app you selected. Deleting that app also deletes its shared files from the device and its Apple Devices backup, so save important documents somewhere else before removing the app.

Back up or restore the iPhone
Apple Devices can back up an iPhone to the Windows computer or to iCloud, and can restore the phone from a backup. For a local computer backup, the General section includes Back Up Now and Manage Backups controls. A local backup can be encrypted with a password. Keep that password safe: Apple warns that an encrypted backup cannot be used if its password is forgotten.

Why the iPhone might not appear
- Check the connection: Make sure the cable fits both ports and supports data, then reconnect the phone.
- Respond to the trust prompt: If the iPhone asks whether to trust the computer, tap Trust and follow the phone’s prompts.
- Check the app and system requirements for File Sharing: This feature requires Apple Devices, Windows 10 or later, current iOS or iPadOS, and an app that supports File Sharing.
- For Wi-Fi syncing, confirm setup: The phone must first have been connected by cable and configured in Apple Devices, and both devices must be on the same Wi-Fi network for subsequent syncing.
