To get more time from a Windows 11 laptop’s current charge, start at Settings > System > Power & battery. Choose a more efficient power mode, enable Energy saver, dim the display, shorten screen and sleep timeouts, and limit only the apps or connections you do not need. These steps reduce power use; they cannot restore capacity lost as a battery ages.
How can I make my laptop battery last longer?
Make these changes in order, then adjust them to fit your work or gaming session. Windows labels can differ slightly by build, and some controls are unavailable on certain PCs.

Choose a power mode for unplugged use
Open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery. Under Power mode, choose Best power efficiency when runtime matters more than peak performance. Balanced is a middle ground; Best performance prioritizes performance and can use more power. If the control is missing or unavailable, the PC’s configuration may determine the available mode. Microsoft’s power-mode guidance explains the options.

Turn on Energy saver
Go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Energy saver. Set it to turn on automatically at a battery threshold, or enable it manually in Settings or Quick Settings. Energy saver reduces some system activity and background processes, so syncing or other background behavior may be reduced. See Microsoft’s Windows battery settings guidance.

Reduce display power use
In Settings > System > Display, lower brightness to a comfortable level. If your laptop offers it, open Advanced display and choose a lower refresh rate when the smoother motion of a higher rate is not important. Lower refresh rates trade smoothness for reduced power demand. Dark mode may save power on OLED screens, but do not expect the same benefit on every LCD laptop. The relevant controls are described in Microsoft’s display settings guide.

Shorten screen and sleep timeouts
Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep. Some Windows 11 builds call this Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Set shorter display-off and sleep intervals for On battery so the screen and active system do not keep running while you are away. Choose intervals that will not interrupt your usual workflow.

Check which apps are using power
Go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage and look for apps with substantial use. For supported apps, you may be able to restrict background activity; do so selectively if you do not need that app’s background syncing or notifications. Windows does not offer this control for every app. For eligible graphics-heavy apps, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics and choose Power saving. Microsoft explains the supported-app limitation in its background activity guidance.

Switch off connections you are not using
Use Airplane mode when you do not need internet, Bluetooth, or other wireless communication, or turn off an unused radio individually. The tradeoff is straightforward: you save the power used by that connection, but lose access to it until it is switched back on.

Use battery-friendly video playback if it suits you
Where available, open Settings > Apps > Video playback and select Optimize for battery life. You may also see an option to play video at a lower resolution on battery. Both can reduce picture quality, so use them only when that tradeoff is acceptable.
What settings drain a laptop battery?
Active display use and a laptop that stays awake when unattended are practical places to start: lower brightness, reduce refresh rate if available, and set screen-off and sleep timers. Apps doing substantial work, background syncing, wireless radios, and a performance-focused power mode can also consume power. Use Battery usage to see which apps are relevant on your own PC rather than assuming a particular app is responsible.

Should I leave Battery Saver on?
In Windows 11, the feature is called Energy saver. You can enable it manually or set a battery threshold for automatic activation. Leaving it on can be useful when you want to reduce system and background activity, but reduced syncing or background behavior may affect convenience. If that matters, set a threshold that suits your routine or turn it on only when you need to conserve charge.

First check for active power use and settings: review Battery usage, display brightness and refresh rate, the selected power mode, and screen and sleep timeouts. If those do not account for unusually short runtime, the battery may have lost capacity with age. A battery report provides capacity and usage clues, but it does not repair or restore worn capacity.

Generate a Windows battery report

Open Command Prompt with administrator privileges.

Run
powercfg /batteryreport. -
Open the HTML report at the location Windows reports in the command output. Review Installed battery, Recent usage, and Battery usage for capacity and usage information. Microsoft documents the command and report in its battery report instructions.
If the report and your usage pattern point to diminished capacity, contact the laptop maker or a qualified repair provider about service. Replacement batteries are model-specific; verify the exact laptop model and compatible part number before considering one. If the battery swells beyond the enclosure, stop using it, handle it cautiously, and do not press or puncture it, following Microsoft’s battery safety guidance.
How do I check laptop battery health and help it last longer?
Getting more runtime from today’s charge and slowing long-term capacity loss are different goals. Power settings reduce current consumption; charging and temperature habits affect battery longevity. Microsoft’s lithium-ion care guidance recommends avoiding frequent deep discharges and, when practical, keeping charge roughly between 20% and 80%. It also warns that high temperatures can accelerate battery deterioration. These are general care recommendations, not a promise of a particular lifespan. See Microsoft’s battery-care guidance.
For long-term storage, Microsoft recommends around 40%–60% charge in a cool, dry place, with periodic checks to avoid deep discharge. This storage advice is not a way to make a current charge last longer.
