Choose an MMO by the kind of play you want now—not by guessing when Riot’s game will arrive. Riot confirms it is working on an MMORPG set in the League universe, but its official material does not give a release date. If you want to try an MMO without starting with a subscription, Guild Wars 2 is one documented low-barrier option; whether it suits you depends on your preferred play style, spending limits, available time, and access in your region.
What is known about Riot’s League MMO?
Riot Games’ official MMO recruiting page says the company is working on an MMORPG based in the League universe. Riot’s January 22, 2024 update described resetting the project’s direction and said it would not be coming soon. That is dated context, not a launch estimate for 2026; the official material cited here gives no release date.
That uncertainty makes it more useful to pick a game that fits your current habits than to look for a temporary stand-in for League lore. An MMO can be a good choice for its own world and activities, even if it has little in common with Riot’s setting.
Start with the kind of MMO play you want
Before comparing titles, decide what you want to spend your play sessions doing. “MMO” covers different mixes of story, exploration, cooperative challenges, and competition. A game that is a good fit for one of those goals may not suit another.

- Story and solo play: Look for a campaign and solo progression that appeal to you. Check whether major story steps require group content rather than assuming you can play entirely alone.
- Group PvE: Decide whether you are interested in dungeons, raids, or other cooperative challenges. Check how groups are formed and whether the activities you want are available in your region.
- PvP: Clarify what kind of competition you mean—such as structured matches or broader player-versus-player activity—and check that the game supports the mode you want.
- Exploration and flexible sessions: Consider whether you enjoy roaming and incremental progress, and whether the game makes it practical to pause and return when your schedule changes.
These are questions to investigate, not a ranking of particular games. Current comparative feature details for other named MMOs are not established here, so check each game’s own current pages before choosing on the basis of specific modes or restrictions.
Compare the full cost, not just the entry price
A free download or free starting tier does not necessarily mean every activity is included or that the game has no optional spending. Compare the complete payment model: what you can play at the start, which upgrades or expansions cost extra, whether a subscription is required or optional, and what the cash shop sells.

Guild Wars 2 as a lower-barrier option
ArenaNet’s game-buying support page says Guild Wars 2’s core game is free and that players can buy upgrades and expansions as they progress. This gives you a way to try the core game before deciding whether to spend on additional content. Check ArenaNet’s current account and content details for the exact limits that apply to a new account.
Free entry is not the same as zero monetization. ArenaNet explains that its gem currency can be earned through play or purchased with money in its microtransaction explanation. If avoiding real-money purchases is important to you, review what the shop offers and decide what boundaries you want to set before playing.

Check time, platform, and regional access
A game can fit your budget and preferred activities but still be a poor practical choice if you cannot access it the way you want. Before committing, verify its current supported platforms, regional availability, account requirements, and any platform-specific restrictions on the game’s official pages. Also consider how often you expect to play: a game you can step away from comfortably may be a better waiting-period choice than one whose ongoing demands feel like an obligation.

- Pick your main activity. Choose story, exploration, group PvE, PvP, or a mix; use that as your first filter.
- Set a spending boundary. Decide whether you will only try free access, pay for expansions, accept a recurring subscription, or avoid optional shop purchases.
- Check what the starting access includes. Read the game’s current official buying or account information, including restrictions that matter to your preferred activities.
- Confirm practical access. Check platform and regional availability, then consider whether the game’s session demands suit the time you have.
- Try before you commit where possible. Treat a free starting point as a way to assess fit, not proof that the whole game is free or right for you.
