Fighting games build an online audience by making matches dependable, opponents accessible and play rewarding both with friends and alone. Retention, however, is not guaranteed by rollback, beginner-friendly controls, new characters or tournament support: those features can improve the experience, but publishers still need enough players to keep returning over time.
Start with online play that feels dependable
For a fighting game, online play is not a side activity if it is how players find most of their opponents. Connection quality shapes whether exchanges feel responsive, while matchmaking determines how long a player waits and whether the match feels fair. Both affect the practical value of logging in.
Riot says it prioritized online play while building 2XKO, including through online playtests. Its account describes rollback netcode and a client-server architecture, which it selected in part to support four-player matches and more consistent performance and scalability. That is Riot’s description of one game’s implementation, not a universal prescription for fighting games. Riot’s explanation of how 2XKO handles online play also describes a Game Validation Server that runs a copy of each competitive match and supplies information to ranking services. Riot says it uses that system for anti-cheat and skill ratings, with Microsoft TrueSkill 2 helping estimate player skill over a handful of games.
These are systems and goals, not published independent evaluations of connection quality, cheating or rating accuracy. When comparing games, look for how they handle connection stability, latency, match verification and ranking—not just whether a feature name appears on a list.

Balance quick queues with close matches
A matchmaker is solving two goals that can conflict: finding a suitable opponent quickly and finding one near the player’s skill level. A narrow skill range can improve parity but lengthen queues; a wider range can get a match started sooner while increasing the chance of a lopsided game.
Riot describes three ways to find opponents in 2XKO: challenge someone in a lobby, queue at a cabinet, or use matchmaking. Cross-lobby matchmaking searches across online lobbies, enlarging the pool beyond the player’s current room; after the match, players return to their original lobbies. Riot’s stated aim is to preserve the social lobby while reducing avoidable queue time. It also acknowledges that population changes the trade-off: a matchmaker may find a fair game quickly at peak hours, while a smaller pool at 3 a.m. can mean greater skill disparity. Riot’s account describes this as a tunable balance, not a guarantee of instant, evenly matched games at every hour.
Make the first matches less intimidating
New players have to learn the game’s rules, characters and timing before they can enjoy close competition. Reducing avoidable execution barriers can help them reach the interesting decisions sooner, without removing the deeper systems experienced players value.

Capcom presents Street Fighter 6’s Modern Controls as an alternative input option that allows special attacks without complex button combinations. It is an example of an accessibility choice, not evidence that the option caused higher retention or settled questions about competitive balance. Capcom’s description of Street Fighter 6 frames the game as serving a wide range of players.

Riot says its server-side spectator system uses a current game-state snapshot to bring someone into an ongoing match. That creates a way to learn and participate socially; the cited account does not measure whether spectating improves retention.
Give players reasons to play together
Fighting games have long had a social dimension, from playing on the same couch to meeting at local tournaments. Online lobbies can recreate part of that routine by letting players gather, issue direct challenges, watch matches and move between casual games and queues. Riot says 2XKO’s lobby design was intended to reflect group play in homes, locals and tournaments.

These features address a different need from ranked matchmaking. A ranked queue is useful when someone wants a measured test against an opponent; a lobby can make the time between matches feel like part of the activity rather than dead time. Duos and friend groups can also give players a reason to return together. But a social space only works if enough people are there to make it feel active, so community features depend on the audience they are meant to support.
Use updates and competition to keep the community moving
New content gives returning players something to explore, while tournaments create shared goals and occasions to watch or participate. Capcom says Street Fighter 6 continued adding characters after launch and announced four new characters for the game’s fourth year. It also points to esports as part of its effort to expand the user base. Those are publisher strategies; they do not establish that new characters or esports caused a particular retention or sales result.

The plan announced 20 Riot-sanctioned events—five Majors and 15 Challengers—with regional opportunities. That is an announced event count from Riot’s 2025 plan, not a claim that all 20 were held. What 2XKO shows about the limits of good systems
2XKO is a useful counterexample to the idea that a strong feature set automatically produces a large, durable audience. Riot said it hoped a free-to-play game would make fighting games more accessible and discoverable, earn trust among core players, and grow as features and content arrived. The company also said free-to-play ambitions require a minimum player base.
In its 2026 retrospective, Riot said committed pockets of the fighting-game community embraced 2XKO, brought friends, formed duos and added it to tournament lineups, but that response was not broad or durable enough. Riot reported positive reactions around releases and competitive events without a meaningful sustained change in the game’s trajectory. It announced that active development would end in December 2026, while the game would remain free to download on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S and its servers would stay online. These are Riot’s assessments and announced plans, not an independent audit or a forecast for other games. Riot’s 2XKO announcement does not disclose numeric retention, monthly active player or engagement series.
The distinction matters when interpreting commercial figures, too. Capcom announced that Street Fighter 6 had passed 7 million worldwide unit sales on June 9, 2026. Sales show units sold, not how many people are currently playing, how often they return or how long they stay. Capcom’s announcement does not make those player-retention measures interchangeable.

How to judge whether an online fighting game is retaining players
No single feature or headline number answers the question. A useful assessment separates the experience a game is designed to offer from evidence that players continue to use it.
| Question | What to examine | What it can tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Can players get a reliable match? | Connection approach, stability, latency constraints and whether matches are verified | Whether the online foundation is designed to support responsive, trustworthy play |
| Can players find opponents? | Queue times, pool size, cross-lobby or cross-platform matching, and low-population behavior | How the game trades speed against opponent skill parity |
| Can newcomers learn and improve? | Control choices, onboarding, replays, spectating and opportunities to practice with others | Whether the game offers multiple paths into its systems |
| Is there a community beyond ranked play? | Social lobbies, group play, local events and support for organizers | Whether players have ways to meet, learn and compete together |
| Are people actually returning? | Published retention, engagement or active-player measures over time | Evidence of ongoing use; features, event counts and sales alone do not establish it |
The primary accounts cited here explain design choices and company assessments, but do not provide a comparable cross-game retention rate or measure the causal effect of any individual feature. The strongest conclusion is therefore practical rather than numerical: reliable infrastructure, fair access to matches, approachable learning, social play and a supported competition scene are plausible ways to make an online fighting game more rewarding. Whether they build a lasting player base depends on whether enough people keep choosing to play.
