As of October 3, 2026, play Star Wars: Episode I: Racer now if you want classic podracing from The Phantom Menace; wait for Star Wars: Galactic Racer if its mix of repulsorcraft, a Shade-led campaign, and runs-based choices sounds more appealing. Galactic Racer is scheduled to launch October 6, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, so it is still upcoming at this comparison’s cutoff. The games offer different racing fantasies rather than a simple old-versus-new upgrade.

The older game’s modern platform details come from Lucasfilm’s Switch and PS4 announcement. Galactic Racer’s platforms, modes, and scheduled date are listed by Steam and in StarWars.com’s gameplay-trailer article.
Choose Episode I: Racer for focused Phantom Menace podracing
If you want to race as part of the world of The Phantom Menace, Episode I: Racer is the direct fit. Lucasfilm’s 2020 announcement describes 25 playable racers and tracks across eight unique worlds. Its feature list also includes pit-droid upgrades to improve top speed and acceleration, plus shortcuts and secrets that reward learning the courses. Lucasfilm’s announcement is the source for those details.
The PS4 release also received platform-specific changes. Aspyr product director Chris Bashaar said the version remapped controls for DualShock 4, uprezzed FMV sequences, and added trophies in Aspyr’s 2020 post. That post says racers could exceed 600 MPH; treat that as the developer’s description of in-game speed, not an independently measured statistic.

Choose Galactic Racer for varied craft and a campaign built around runs
Galactic Racer broadens the vehicle lineup beyond podracers. Its gameplay reveal names landspeeders, speeder bikes, and skim speeders alongside podracers, and identifies Sentinel One, Jakku, Ando Prime, and Lantaana as locations. The game is set in a new racing league on Jakku and elsewhere, with Shade pursuing glory and revenge. These are announced features, not findings from a finished-game review; see StarWars.com’s gameplay-trailer article.
The structure is another important difference. Fuse Games co-founder Matt Webster described inspiration from runs-based games and choices involving a starting vehicle, upgrades or build, and events in StarWars.com’s reveal interview. Steam describes a story-driven campaign and lists single-player, online PvP, and cross-platform multiplayer. That combination makes Galactic Racer the one to watch if you want racing wrapped in a character-focused campaign and repeated run choices, rather than a game centered chiefly on classic course racing.

Which Star Wars racing game should I play?
Pick Star Wars: Episode I: Racer if you want to play now, prefer the unmistakable Phantom Menace podracing fantasy, or need documented split-screen play. Pick Star Wars: Galactic Racer if you can wait for its scheduled release and are more interested in several repulsorcraft types, a Shade-led campaign, and runs-based choices with online PvP.
