The clearest modern examples are Sonic Origins and Sonic Colors: Ultimate, both described by SEGA as remasters, plus the remastered Sonic Generations included in SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS. That last package also adds a new Shadow campaign. Sonic Adventure DX is best described cautiously as an updated edition and later re-release: the available official details do not establish whether it meets a strict technical definition of a remaster or port.
What do “port,” “remaster,” and “remake” mean?
These labels are useful shorthand, not universal industry standards. A practical distinction is:
- Port: an existing game moved to another platform, with limited changes to its underlying content.
- Remaster: the same core game presented with meaningful technical or presentation updates, such as higher-resolution visuals, display options, audio changes, or quality-of-life features.
- Remake: a substantially rebuilt game whose assets, systems, or design have been recreated rather than mainly carried forward.
When SEGA supplies a label, it is clearest to use that label and describe the actual changes. A new release or updated edition is not automatically a remake.
Sonic Origins: a remastered collection
SEGA calls Sonic Origins a “digital remaster.” It brings together four classic games: Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic CD, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles. SEGA lists its release date as June 23, 2022, and its platforms as Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. See SEGA’s Sonic Origins page for the collection and platform details.

Two ways to play
The official manual distinguishes Anniversary Mode, which uses an updated widescreen presentation, from Classic Mode, which preserves the original 4:3 format. The collection also adds modes, saved data, and unlockable museum content. Those presentation and collection features support calling it a remastered collection; they do not establish that the four games were wholly remade. SEGA’s Sonic Origins manual describes the modes and features.
What Sonic Origins Plus adds
Sonic Origins Plus expands the package with 12 Game Gear titles, makes Amy playable in the included games, and adds Knuckles to Sonic CD. SEGA’s official product page describes the additions.

SEGA’s purchase guide lists physical and digital editions. The physical edition includes the base game, Classic Music Pack, Premium Fun Pack, and Plus Content Pack; it also lists an original artbook and reversible Genesis jacket as bonuses. The Plus Content Pack must be downloaded with the included code, so buyers of that edition should account for the download rather than expect every addition on the disc or cartridge.
Sonic Colors: Ultimate: a remaster of the Wii game
Sonic Colors: Ultimate revisits the 2010 Wii game. SEGA’s 2021 announcement describes enhanced high-resolution characters and stages, remixed stage and boss music, a rerecorded opening theme, and added features: Tails Save, Jade Ghost Wisp, Rival Rush, and customization items. The announcement gives September 9, 2021 as the release date. Read SEGA’s release announcement for its description of the changes.

SEGA Sammy’s investor presentation also classifies Sonic Colors: Ultimate as a “Remaster,” providing an explicit publisher-group label. The presentation is available here.
SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS: a remaster plus a new campaign
SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS combines two distinct things. SEGA says it includes a complete remaster of SONIC GENERATIONS, a collection of 2D and 3D stages with upgraded visuals and bonus content, alongside SHADOW GENERATIONS, a brand-new campaign starring Shadow. The remastered portion is Sonic Generations; the Shadow campaign is new content. Calling the whole package only a port or a remake of the original would blur that distinction.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Sonic Adventure DX: an updated edition, with the strict label unsettled
Sonic Adventure DX is an updated later edition of Sonic Adventure. SEGA’s Japanese game page confirms a Japan-specific Steam release beginning January 23, 2024, but its description does not provide enough detail to compare the underlying changes with the original and determine whether “remaster” or “remake” is technically justified. “Updated edition” or “later re-release” is therefore the more careful description; use “port” only when discussing a sourced platform history. See SEGA’s Japanese listing.

How to compare editions before choosing one
For a returning player or buyer, the label alone does not tell you exactly what a release contains. Compare the parts that affect the experience and the edition you can actually purchase:
- Original games: check which individual titles are included. Sonic Origins contains four core games; Sonic Origins Plus adds 12 Game Gear titles.
- Presentation and audio: look for concrete changes such as widescreen options, higher-resolution visuals, or remixed music.
- Added content: distinguish extras within an existing game from an entirely new campaign, as with the Shadow story in SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS.
- Platform and region: confirm that the release is available for your system and in your region. SEGA’s listed platform information and Japan-specific Sonic Adventure DX Steam listing do not establish current availability everywhere.
- Edition format and downloads: check whether physical bonuses are included and whether a code or download is needed for some content, as with the Sonic Origins Plus physical edition.
These examples are notable modern releases, not a complete catalogue of every Sonic conversion across arcades, handhelds, phones, regional releases, compilations, and home consoles. Store inventory and regional availability can change, so confirm the current listing for your platform before buying.
