There is no source-backed universal best ability combination in CONTROL Resonant. The strongest fit depends on what you need in a fight: safer openings, crowd control, status setup, summon pressure, or a way to turn an ability into a melee or execution opportunity. Build around what you plan to do next—not just the abilities that sound strongest.
How abilities fit into a CONTROL Resonant build
Remedy describes three build pillars: supernatural Combat Abilities earned by defeating Resonants, Aberrant weapon forms, and Talents that strengthen the links between abilities and melee attacks. Some Resonant rewards involve branching choices, so a first playthrough may not let you unlock every option.
The combat loop makes those pieces matter together: melee hits restore Combat Ability resource; abilities can stun enemies and create execution openings; and executions temporarily increase melee damage. A useful combination therefore helps you keep that cycle moving—for example, by creating room to approach, setting up a status effect, or controlling enemies while you attack. Which abilities work well together?
These are role-based options grounded in the abilities’ described effects, not a tested tier list. Epic Games Store’s guide offers some of the pairings; the best fit still depends on the encounter, your progression, and how comfortably you can maintain melee pressure.

Choose by the job you want the build to do
If survival is the priority
Consider Shield when you want to absorb damage and use a dodge-enabled Bash to help create a falter or stagger opening. It is a defensive option, not a guarantee of safety or a universally superior pick.
If you want summons to buy you room
Growth plus Spike is the guide’s concrete summon-pressure recommendation: Growth’s allies attack at range while Spike attacks nearby enemies and can knock them down. This can leave you space to engage, but it is an editorial recommendation rather than a measured comparison with other combinations.

If you want to exploit the arena
Ground Slam and Push offer area damage and displacement. Look for height that benefits Ground Slam or hazards and ledges that make Push more useful; without those environmental opportunities, the same combination may be less valuable.
If you want status effects to do part of the work
Use Spore Burst or Growth to apply Infected, then look for a way to apply Burn so the target can trigger the interaction described in the guide. Astralized from Spike or Astral Rebuke enhances Burn and Infected buildup, giving another route to a status-focused setup.

If you want to keep the melee loop moving
Prioritize abilities that help you close safely, stagger enemies, or hold them in place long enough to attack. Melee restores Combat Ability resource, and executions temporarily raise melee damage, so a build that repeatedly disengages from melee may not take full advantage of that loop.
What should you compare before choosing?
No controlled damage comparisons, ability rankings, or all-encounter best build are established by the cited sources. Use these practical questions to decide what fits your combat rhythm:

- Survival: Does the combination help you absorb or avoid pressure while finding an opening?
- Crowd control: Can it stagger, knock down, distract, or displace enemies?
- Range: Do you want abilities or summons to pressure enemies from a distance, or do you want to stay close?
- Status interaction: Can you apply Infected, Burn, or Astralized in a sequence that supports your plan?
- Resource flow: Does the setup help you return to melee and executions, which feed into the ability-resource and melee-damage loop?
- Setup and positioning: Does the combination need height, hazards, time to summon, or a particular sequence of effects?
How progression changes your options
First playthrough
Resonant reward choices can be mutually exclusive at the time you make them unless you reset, according to the Epic Games Store guide. That guide also describes a later Resonant Token that grants an additional Combat Ability choice. Plan around the options you have actually unlocked rather than assuming every ability can be equipped or acquired immediately.
New Game Plus
Remedy Lead Gameplay Designer Sergey Mohov says New Game Plus carries over Aberrant upgrades, health and ability-resource improvements, unlocked supernatural Combat Abilities, Talents, and Artifacts. Traversal abilities remain tied to story progression. NG+ also adds Talent nodes and lets you equip multiple different Combat Abilities from the same boss, opening combinations that are not available in the same way earlier. Remedy’s NG+ overview describes these changes.

Adjust difficulty if managing a build gets in the way
Assist Mode lets you adjust Enemy Aggression, Perfect Dodge Window, Enemy Projectile Speed, Incoming and Outgoing Damage, Outgoing Falter, Power Recovery Speed, and melee magnetizing. These settings can reduce pressure or make ability and melee timing more forgiving without requiring you to abandon a build you enjoy. Remedy’s Assist Mode article lists the adjustments.
