Microsoft announced in May 2024 that Arkane Austin, Tango Gameworks and Alpha Dog would close. Roundhouse was not shut down: its team moved to ZeniMax Online Studios. The decisions ended development on Redfall, but Microsoft said the game and its servers would stay online. Later reporting in 2026 changed the picture for two of the studios: Krafton revived Tango, and Alpha Dog was reported to be independent again.
What happened to each studio?
The May 7, 2024 announcement affected four teams, but only three were designated for closure at the time. Roundhouse’s team was folded into another studio.
| Studio | May 2024 outcome | Later status or related game details |
|---|---|---|
| Arkane Austin | Microsoft announced the studio would close. | Arkane Austin made Redfall. Microsoft said its last update had been released, ending development, while the game and servers would remain online. The company also said it would make make-good offers to players who purchased the Hero DLC. Ars Technica reported the announcement. |
| Tango Gameworks | Microsoft announced the studio would close. | Tango made Hi-Fi Rush, which Microsoft said would remain available on its existing platforms. A 2026 report says Krafton revived the studio; it should not be described as permanently closed. Game Developer covered the 2024 announcement; GamesRadar+ reported the later status. |
| Alpha Dog | Microsoft announced the studio would close. | Alpha Dog made Mighty Doom. Microsoft said the game would sunset on August 7, 2024, with in-game purchases turned off. A 2026 report, citing founder Shawn Woods’s profile, said Alpha Dog was independently owned again; its current work was unclear. Game Developer reported the closure and game sunset; GamesRadar+ reported the ownership update. |
| Roundhouse | Its team joined ZeniMax Online Studios rather than being shut down. | The team was to work on The Elder Scrolls Online. Game Informer reported the staff changes. |
What Microsoft said about the decision
Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty described the changes as a “reprioritization of titles and resources.” In a staff message reproduced by Game Informer on May 7, 2024, Booty said the changes were intended to prioritize high-impact titles and further invest in Bethesda’s portfolio and other parts of the business.
That is Microsoft’s stated rationale, not a demonstrated account of why each studio was affected. Contemporary coverage noted the contrast between Redfall’s troubled release and Hi-Fi Rush’s positive reception, but the reporting does not establish that the performance of either game caused the closures. Game Developer reported that Hi-Fi Rush had attracted three million players as of its May 7, 2024 article; that figure was reported by the outlet and does not by itself establish profitability or explain Microsoft’s decision.

What the announcement meant for players
Redfall
Development ended with the game’s previous update, according to Microsoft’s announcement. The company said the game and its servers would remain online and that it would make make-good offers to eligible purchasers of the Hero DLC. The announcement did not mean that Redfall immediately became unplayable.
Hi-Fi Rush
Microsoft said the game would remain available on its existing platforms. That availability statement was about the platforms on which it was already offered; it was not a promise of future updates or a new release.

Mighty Doom
Microsoft announced a sunset date of August 7, 2024, and said in-game purchases would be turned off. That date has passed; the original announcement should not be mistaken for a current guarantee that the game remains playable or available.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to describe the studios’ status now
The May 2024 announcement is not the final word on every company’s status. According to a 2026 GamesRadar+ report, Krafton revived Tango Gameworks, while Alpha Dog was independently owned again. The same report said Alpha Dog’s current work was unclear. Those later developments are distinct from Microsoft’s 2024 decision to close the studios; they do not change the original outcome for Arkane Austin or Roundhouse’s move into ZeniMax Online.
