Prototype only the uncertain mechanic—not a miniature version of the whole game. Start with one question, choose the simplest format that preserves the behavior you need to test, and build a small scenario that lets a player try it. Use the result to decide what to change or whether the idea is ready to expand.
1. Turn the idea into one testable question
Write down what you do not yet know. A useful question is specific enough that you can watch for an answer: does a dash create meaningful choices, can players read a charge-up attack, or does spending a limited resource change what they do?
A prototype is an experiment, not a miniature game. Unity’s Creative Core: Prototyping course frames the work around finding what should be at the heart of an experience, then scoping and testing a basic version. Keep your question visible while you work; it helps prevent unrelated features from taking over.
2. Choose the lightest format that captures the uncertainty
The best format is the one that preserves the behavior you need to observe. Paper can be enough for a rules question; it cannot tell you whether a real-time jump or attack feels responsive.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| What you need to test | Useful first format | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Turn rules, card effects, resource exchanges, or branching choices | Paper, cards, tokens, or a small spreadsheet | Players can enact rules and choices without a game shell. Unity describes paper, physical building blocks, and on-screen prototypes as possible media; Jeremy Gibson Bond’s book also covers paper prototyping. |
| Movement, timing, collision, physics, or input response | A minimal playable scene with placeholder art | The uncertainty depends on real-time response, so a physical mock-up may not capture it. Unity and Epic document greyboxing and playable engine workflows. |
| Spatial puzzles, level geometry, or pathing | A small greybox test room | An isolated space is easier to change and replay. Unity describes testing ideas in a “gym” or “zoo” and using ProBuilder to greybox and playtest levels. |
| Whether an idea is legible or engaging | A short paper or playable scenario shown to a player | Observe what the player does and where they hesitate or misunderstand, rather than relying only on whether they say they like it. |
Compare formats by how faithfully they capture the uncertainty, how easily you can change a rule, how observable player behavior will be, how much technical setup they require, and whether they reproduce real-time feel. No single format is fastest for every mechanic.
3. Build the minimum loop
Include only what a player needs to try the mechanic and understand what happened: the relevant input, the mechanic’s rule, and visible feedback or an outcome. Add surrounding elements only when the test would otherwise be confusing. For a dash, that might mean a simple space to move through, a way to trigger the dash, and feedback that shows its result—not a full character progression system or finished level.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Unity’s Creative Core: Prototyping course covers selecting an approach, scoping critical features, creating a functional prototype, and testing a basic experience. Treat every extra feature as a cost: include it only if the mechanic cannot be tested without it.
Keep visuals temporary
Use primitives, rough geometry, labels, and default assets. Unity’s level-design guidance explains that simple white or grey boxes are easier to manipulate because changes do not require adjusting art, lighting, and other details. Delay detailed 3D assets until the design warrants that work. The same guide discusses paper, physical blocks, on-screen prototypes, and ProBuilder for greyboxing and playtesting: Unity’s level-design article.

4. Test the question, then iterate
- Set up one small scenario. Give the player the context needed to encounter the mechanic, but avoid explaining away the behavior you want to observe.
- Watch what happens. Note choices, mistakes, hesitations, and moments when the player behaves differently from your expectation. If readability is the question, pay attention to what they understand without extra explanation.
- Change the relevant rule or parameter. Adjust the part connected to your original question rather than adding unrelated content.
- Repeat and compare. Use the same basic scenario where possible so you can see whether the change affected the behavior you care about. Keep the prototype or notes so the result can be reproduced.
Unity’s prototyping course includes testing an experience prototype, and Bond’s book covers testing and iteration. Neither establishes a universal player count, session duration, or pass/fail threshold. Decide what evidence would answer your particular question before testing, and interpret the result against that question rather than an invented industry-wide benchmark.
5. Decide whether to revise or expand
Use the evidence to make a design decision: keep the mechanic, revise the relevant rule and test again, or set it aside. Expand into more of the game only when the test has answered the original uncertainty well enough for the project’s needs. There is no universal success threshold; the right standard depends on the question and the risk of building around a mistaken assumption.

Unity and Unreal routes
Unity
Unity’s official Creative Core: Prototyping course is marked Unity Version 6.0 and covers choosing and scoping a prototype idea, greyboxing, building on a basic prototype, ProBuilder, and testing. For a spatial or level-design question, Unity’s level-design article describes using ProBuilder to design, greybox, prototype, and playtest without separate 3D modeling software.
Unreal Engine
Epic’s Unreal Engine 5.8 puzzle-adventure tutorial uses Blueprints for gameplay, scripted events, and interactable elements, and demonstrates a graybox workflow that adds discrete interactions such as keys and doors, switches and cubes, moving platforms, traps, enemies, sprint, and an end state. For a mechanic prototype, keep only the interactions needed to test your question.

Neither engine is established as universally quicker. Use the tool your team already knows unless the uncertainty specifically depends on a feature in another engine.

Jeremy Gibson Bond’s Introduction to Game Design, Prototyping, and Development, 3rd Edition covers paper prototyping, testing, iteration, and five game tutorials. The publisher lists it as copyright 2023 and says its examples use Unity 2020.3 LTS, so its Unity examples are tied to that version rather than the current Unity 6.0 course.
