Nintendo Switch 2 GameChat lets you voice-chat, share a game screen, or video-chat with friends from the console’s C Menu. You do not need a special game just to chat: title compatibility matters for certain in-game camera effects and for GameShare, Nintendo’s separate feature for letting others play supported software. GameChat currently requires Nintendo Switch Online; its temporary open-access period ended March 31, 2026.
What GameChat does
GameChat is a Nintendo Switch 2 system feature for online voice chat, video chat, and sharing what is on your game screen. Open the C Menu by pressing the C Button on a Joy-Con 2 or supported Switch 2 controller, or from HOME. Create a room and invite friends, or join an invitation. You can chat while playing different games or while not playing a game at all.
- A room can include up to 12 participants: you and up to 11 invited friends.
- Up to four participants can share a game screen or camera video at the same time.
- The Switch 2’s built-in microphone handles voice chat; you do not need a separate microphone accessory.
Nintendo says the built-in microphone adjusts to the surroundings and filters background and game audio. Network conditions and physical distance can affect delay. See Nintendo’s GameChat FAQ and setup instructions.
What you need to use GameChat
- A Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Account.
- A persistent internet connection, a successful initial server connection test, and a current system update.
- A Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo’s temporary open-access period ran from June 5, 2025, through March 31, 2026; membership is now required.
- A phone number registered to your Nintendo Account and verified during setup.
- Friends on your Friend List who have approved you in return.
Nintendo’s first-time setup flow starts in the C Menu: select your user, test the server connection, accept the GameChat terms, verify the registered phone number, then approve friends. Each person you invite must approve you as well. The original Nintendo Switch cannot join Switch 2 GameChat voice or video sessions.

Does GameChat require a compatible game?
No—not for ordinary voice chat, video chat, or game-screen sharing. Nintendo says GameChat is available on Switch 2 regardless of which game is running. Compatibility applies to specific extras, not the basic chat service:
- In-game camera features: Some games support features such as CameraPlay, character avatars, or augmented-reality filters. These are game-specific additions.
- GameShare: This separate feature lets people play supported software shared by another player. It requires a compatible game and may support one connection method but not another.
Nintendo’s examples of games to explore while chatting include Mario Kart World, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, and Overcooked! 2 in an August 5, 2025 article. An October 20, 2025 article adds Among Us, ARMS, and Kirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World. These are examples, not a complete list of compatible games. Nintendo cautions that sharing the screen in Among Us may reveal the Impostor’s identity. See Nintendo’s GameChat game examples.

How GameShare differs from GameChat
GameChat connects people; GameShare lets them play certain shared games for a session. Nintendo lists examples including Super Mario Party Jamboree – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV, Fast Fusion, and Split Fiction in its August article, and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, NBA 2K26, and Chillin’ by the Fire in the October article. The examples are not exhaustive, and compatibility varies by title and connection method.
A Switch 2 is required to host GameShare. Online GameShare through GameChat is limited to Switch 2 systems; local wireless can include an original Switch if the specific software supports that mode. Up to four systems can participate. Guests do not receive a permanent copy: access ends with the session. Streaming can introduce delay, and Nintendo says image quality is reduced. Check the game’s software information or title-specific instructions before relying on a particular mode. Nintendo’s GameShare FAQ explains the distinction.

Using a camera for video chat
A camera is optional for GameChat overall. Voice chat works with the console’s built-in microphone; video chat requires a compatible USB camera. Nintendo Switch 2 Camera is one example. Typical third-party USB cameras may work, but Nintendo does not guarantee compatibility. To check a camera, use Test USB Camera in the console settings.

Children and supervised accounts
For children under 16 and supervised accounts, a parent or guardian must set up GameChat parental controls in the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app before use. Parents can approve or revoke individual friends, and children in this group cannot chat with unapproved people. The other participant—or that participant’s guardian—must also approve the child.

Camera permissions and activity information
Video permission is requested for each new GameChat room. A parent can disable video chat, control whether a child may request permission, and limit the camera view to face-only, person-only, or full video. If video chat is disabled, the child will not see other participants’ camera feeds; Nintendo says this does not prevent screen sharing.
The app can show whether a child used GameChat, the session’s start time and length, whether a camera or GameShare was used, and which friends they interacted with. Nintendo says parents cannot access the conversations themselves. Players can block or report people who violate Nintendo’s Community Guidelines. See Nintendo’s parental-controls guidance.
