The exits and pauses documented here have different explanations: financial pressure and roster costs at Complexity, economic and strategic factors at ALTERNATE aTTaX, and poor results and wider organizational difficulties at Evil Geniuses. Betting rules and investigations form part of the environment around those decisions, not a proven common cause.
Which Counter-Strike departures are being discussed?
“Leaving Counter-Strike” can mean different things: an organization can drop its professional roster, pause fielding one, or a league can suspend operations. Those are not interchangeable, and none should automatically be attributed to betting scrutiny.
| Organization or competition | What happened | Reason described in the cited reporting or announcement | Evidence tying it to betting scrutiny |
|---|---|---|---|
| Evil Geniuses | Announced its Counter-Strike exit in January 2024. | HLTV’s report described poor competitive results from 2021 onward, roster changes, organizational challenges, and broader contraction across the organization. That is reporter analysis, not a direct official explanation establishing one cause. | No link to betting scrutiny is identified in the report. |
| ALTERNATE aTTaX | In October 2024, said it would not field a professional CS2 team in 2025 for the time being, while focusing on its Evo development project. | The organization cited a tense economic situation, the state of the CS2 ecosystem, and strategic realignment. Project Director Lennart Kreuter said: “Our decision may initially seem like a setback, but it opens up the opportunity for us to explore new avenues and redefine our commitment to Counter-Strike.” | The announcement’s stated factors do not establish a betting-related cause. |
| Complexity | Announced its Counter-Strike exit in August 2025. | CEO Jason Lake told HLTV that shrinking revenue and a lack of sponsorship opportunities made it difficult to afford proper support for a tier-one team. | Lake’s stated explanation concerned economics, not betting rules or an integrity investigation. |
| ESL Impact | Announced a suspension of league operations after its eighth season in November 2025. | ESL said the league’s current economic model was not sustainable despite significant investment. | This is a league pause in women’s Counter-Strike, not an organization leaving the game; the announcement does not identify betting scrutiny as its cause. |
Why did Complexity leave Counter-Strike?
Complexity’s CEO gave the clearest direct account among these examples. Jason Lake said: “After a really strong ’23 and ’24, 2025 in the esports economy has been really challenging for us, and quite simply we have not been able to drive enough revenue to afford to properly support a tier-one team.”
Lake also described efforts to find other sources of support: “We have tried everything and turned over every rock, searched for investment and revenue, but it’s just been an incredibly difficult time economically and with shrinking revenues this year, it kind of forced our hand.” HLTV reported these comments from a video posted by Complexity. They point to revenue, sponsorship, investment, and the cost of sustaining a top-level roster—not to betting scrutiny.

What do Valve and tournament organizers do about betting integrity?
Valve warns against betting and sharing inside information
Valve’s published Counter-Strike guidance warns professional players, teams, and event production staff against gambling on matches, associating with high-volume CS:GO gamblers, and sharing information that could affect bets. In its CS:GO-era post “Unnecessary Risks,” Valve stated: “Betting using inside information, or even the perception or suspicion thereof, carries a significant risk of damaging your personal brand, your team, your community, and may lead to exclusion from future Valve-sponsored events.” This is Valve’s published warning from the CS:GO era, not evidence that a particular team left because of a new 2026 rule.
ESL rules can affect sponsor branding at events
ESL’s 2026 Counter-Strike rulebook restricts sponsors or partners considered harmful to ESL’s reputation and disallows some entities that interact with Valve game inventories. It also requires alternative branding when law, regulation, or platform rules prohibit a team’s gambling-related branding at an event. The rulebook details consequences for participant withdrawals as well.
These provisions show that sponsorship and branding can face tournament-level constraints. They do not, by themselves, show that those constraints caused any named organization to leave Counter-Strike.

What does the ATOX investigation establish?
ESIC said allegations involving ATOX arose in late 2024 around an ESL Pro League Season 20 match against Team Falcons. ESIC circulated a Suspicious Betting Alert Network notice, received additional betting-related statistical data on 9 January 2025, conducted an investigation, and issued sanctions on 15 April 2025.

Do betting alerts mean matches were fixed?
No. An alert is a signal warranting attention, not a finding that a match was manipulated. The International Betting Integrity Association reported 70 suspicious betting alerts across 10 sports in Q1 2026; 15 were esports alerts, or 22% of the total. IBIA treats the esports alerts as global because events can be transnational. The figure is neither Counter-Strike-specific nor a count of proven violations, and it does not measure team departures.
Does betting scrutiny mean betting sponsors have disappeared?
No. Betting partnerships remained visible in Counter-Strike’s commercial landscape in 2025: HEROIC announced Razed as a CS2 sponsor in August, including jersey branding and digital activations. That example shows that sponsorship and scrutiny can coexist; it does not establish that every betting partner is acceptable at every event or in every jurisdiction, or that team economics are healthy.

What the evidence supports—and what it does not
The evidence supports a narrower conclusion than the headline’s implied causal link: betting integrity is a documented concern, Valve has warned participants about gambling and inside information, tournament rules can restrict branding, and ESIC has investigated a Counter-Strike case. But the cited organization departures have separately described financial, strategic, competitive, or organizational pressures. No direct evidence here establishes betting scrutiny as the general cause of teams leaving Counter-Strike.
