Esports betting deals must clear more than one rulebook. A sponsor may be acceptable under a game publisher’s policy yet still create gambling-law or advertising exposure in a market where its service is available. Conversely, an operator’s gambling licence does not automatically make its sponsorship acceptable to a publisher, tournament organizer, or integrity program. Teams and event partners need to check market rules, competition rules, and integrity controls separately.
Three layers of rules determine whether a betting deal can proceed
There is no single worldwide esports betting rule. The relevant requirements depend on where bets are accepted or promoted, which game and competition are involved, and the rules binding the people and organizations taking part.
- Gambling and advertising law: Regulators and statutes govern operators and promotions in the markets where a betting service is offered or can be accessed.
- Publisher and tournament rules: A game publisher or competition organizer can restrict sponsors, branding, content, participant conduct, or data use within its ecosystem.
- Integrity arrangements: Teams, operators, event organizers, and participants may have separate duties covering betting, confidential information, monitoring, reporting, investigations, and sanctions.
A deal should be assessed against all three layers for the relevant territory, game, competition tier, channels, and activation dates. Permission at one layer does not waive the others.
What the UK rules mean for esports betting and sponsorship
Betting on esports is regulated as betting on an event
The UK Gambling Commission says betting on esports should be treated no differently from betting on another live event. Its position paper, Virtual currencies, eSports and social casino gaming, says the existing regulatory framework, rigorously applied, is sufficient to mitigate esports risks, even where those risks manifest differently. The Commission also highlights the potential exposure of children and young people to gambling marketing and the integrity of competitions.

This is a Great Britain regulatory account, not a statement of rules for every country or every part of the UK. The Commission’s esports paper describes a fragmented governance environment at the time it was written; it should not be read as a current, definitive count of global esports governing bodies.
Market access matters when an operator sponsors a team or event
The Gambling Commission’s sponsorship guidance warns sports organizations about agreements with unlicensed operators where their gambling services can be accessed by consumers in Great Britain. A sponsor’s claim that it blocks British customers is not conclusive: the Commission warns that geo-blocking can be circumvented, including through VPNs. The guidance calls for due diligence and ongoing monitoring, including checks on access controls, partner conduct, source of funds, and reputational risk. It also flags heightened integrity concerns where betting occurs in markets outside the Commission’s and national governing bodies’ reach.

The Commission’s sponsorship guidance was last updated on 18 February 2025. Because regulator guidance and market rules can change, teams and organizers considering a deal should check the current guidance and the operator’s actual market access rather than treating that dated page as a permanent statement of law.
A proposed UK ban is not yet a ban in force
In a ministerial statement dated 15 July 2026, the UK government described a consultation and its intention to prohibit unlicensed gambling sponsorship and advertising across sectors. The stated sporting scope includes kit and equipment sponsorships, tournament programmes, venue infrastructure, and event, league, and venue naming. The government identified August 2027 as its preferred start date. This is a proposed change and stated timetable, not evidence that the ban has already taken effect.

Integrity rules reach players, teams, operators, and organizers
Integrity work is not just a communications response after a suspicious match. The Gambling Commission’s esports paper discusses risk assessments, suspicious-market monitoring, intelligence protocols, participant rules on betting and personal records, effective investigations and sanctions, player education, and controls for commercial arrangements between gambling-interested companies and participants, teams, or leagues.
UK Gambling Commission Licence Conditions and Codes of Practice (LCCP) Condition 4.2.8’s ordinary code addresses licensees offering bets on sports regulated by a specified governing body. It says they should take reasonable steps to learn the body’s betting rules, particularly rules for participants; make bet validity conditional on customers following relevant betting and inside-information rules; and take steps to void a bet if they identify a breach. This is code guidance for licensees, not a standalone statutory ban applying to every esports participant.

Other jurisdictions can impose different operator controls. For example, Massachusetts law requires commercially reasonable methods to prohibit certain sports participants and people with relevant confidential information from wagering in covered circumstances. It also addresses restrictions on categories of wagering, reporting abnormal betting patterns, and cooperation with integrity investigations. Those provisions are a Massachusetts example, not a rule that can be generalized to all US states.
Publisher policies can add sponsor limits beyond local law
Riot’s 2025 policy is limited to specified teams and regions
On 26 June 2025, Riot Games announced that eligible Tier 1 League of Legends and VALORANT teams in the Americas and EMEA could pursue betting sponsors subject to its program and vetting. Riot said partners must use GRID to power offerings, and participating teams must have integrity programs covering policy development, monitoring, and education. Team-produced betting-related content remains subject to the program, platform terms, and local rules.

Riot also said its own broadcasts and social channels would remain free of betting ads and sponsored segments, and betting-partner logos could not appear on team jerseys. These are Riot’s declared conditions for the covered parts of its ecosystem; they are not universal esports requirements and do not replace gambling or advertising law.
Conduct codes continue to apply after a sponsor is approved
Riot’s 2025 Esports Global Code of Conduct update addresses match-fixing, manipulation, and gambling. It describes accountability where relatives or affiliates contribute to violations, possible reporting of suspected national-law violations to relevant agencies, sanctions, and leadership accountability. A sponsor approval therefore does not excuse player, staff, or team conduct that breaches a code or applicable law.

| Jurisdiction and source | What the rule addresses | Practical significance |
|---|---|---|
| North Carolina, General Statutes § 18C-901 | Defines electronic sports for its wagering framework and identifies the video-game publisher as the sports governing body for an esports competition, regardless of where that competition occurs. | Shows how a state statute can connect publisher authority with esports wagering. It does not establish a nationwide rule. |
| Massachusetts, General Laws, Chapter 23N, Section 11 | Requires specified operator controls on participant and confidential-information-holder betting; also covers requests to restrict wagering categories, abnormal-betting reports, and cooperation with integrity investigations. | Operators and relevant competition stakeholders must account for the state’s requirements when the provision applies. It should not be treated as representative of every state. |
These examples illustrate different statutory approaches; the applicable rule depends on the state and the specific wagering activity. Neither example supplies a complete survey of US law.
What the headline betting figures do—and do not—show
In its 26 June 2025 announcement, Riot attributed to Sportradar a figure of $10.7 billion in 2024 global betting turnover involving League of Legends Esports and VCT alone. Turnover is not revenue or profit, and the underlying Sportradar report was not separately reviewed for this account. Riot also said that 70% of bets across all sports were placed in unregulated markets, citing bookmakers not licensed in those markets. That percentage is Riot’s attributed claim, not an independently verified statistic here. Neither figure establishes how much esports betting occurs in any one jurisdiction or what a particular operator earns.

How each stakeholder should assess a deal
Teams
- Identify every market in which the sponsor accepts bets or its service can be accessed, then verify licensing and applicable advertising rules.
- Confirm that the publisher and event rules permit the category for the team’s game, tier, region, channels, uniforms, and planned activations.
- Document operator vetting, market-access checks, audience protections, player conduct requirements, and ongoing monitoring.
- Set contract terms for content approval, alternate branding where needed, continuing compliance checks, and termination if a licence or policy status changes.
Sponsors and operators
- Check the licence position in each target market and do not treat approval from a publisher or organizer as authorization to offer gambling there.
- Determine whether the publisher requires approved data, monitoring, integrity education, or specific reporting arrangements.
- Build participant restrictions and suspicious-betting cooperation into operating procedures where applicable law or competition rules require them.
Tournament organizers
- State clearly which publisher, tournament rulebook, and jurisdictional requirements govern the event.
- Define participant betting and inside-information rules, incident reporting, investigation powers, and available sanctions.
- Review commercial relationships involving teams, participants, leagues, and gambling-interested companies, including how concerns will be escalated.
Players and staff
- Treat nonpublic information about matches, rosters, strategies, or other relevant matters as an integrity concern when betting rules prohibit its use or disclosure.
- Check the rules that apply through local law, employer or team policy, publisher code, tournament rules, and operator terms rather than assuming one document governs everything.
- Use the event’s designated reporting route if approached about betting or if suspicious activity is observed.
A practical pre-signing review
- Map the markets: List where the service is offered, where its promotion will appear, and where the audience can access it. Verify licences and advertising restrictions in each relevant territory.
- Map the competition rules: Identify the publisher, tournament organizer, game, tier, season, and policy version. Confirm sponsor-category approval and limits on jerseys, broadcasts, social media, and team content.
- Check integrity obligations: Specify participant betting bans, inside-information protections, required data sources, monitoring, suspicious-activity reporting, investigations, and sanctions.
- Agree operational controls: Assign responsibility for vetting and continuing checks; document approvals, content review, access controls, and escalation contacts.
- Record status and dates: Distinguish rules already in force from publisher policies, ordinary-code guidance, consultations, and proposed legislation. Set a review trigger for policy, licence, or law changes before activation.
The governing documents can change by jurisdiction, title, season, and event. This overview is not legal advice or a global survey; parties assessing a real sponsorship or wagering arrangement should verify the current rules with the relevant regulator, publisher, organizer, and qualified counsel.
