There is no single ownership template—and owning a team does not automatically mean owning a place in its league. Game publishers set league participation terms, while teams combine different revenue sources and costs to try to build a sustainable business.
Who owns an esports team?
Ownership varies by organization. A team may start with a founder or player group, bring in investors while its founders continue to operate it, be acquired by an investment group, or be formed as part of a larger sports or commercial organization. These are broad patterns, not a complete legal taxonomy. S&P Global’s analysis describes all of them, including traditional football clubs’ involvement in esports. Founders and investors can share ownership and leadership
In 2016, aXiomatic announced that it had bought a controlling interest in Team Liquid, while founders Steve Arhancet and Victor Goossens would remain owners and co-CEOs. The arrangement illustrates why equity ownership, control, and day-to-day leadership should be treated as separate questions: an investor can hold control while founders retain ownership and executive roles. Teams can sit inside larger organizations
A traditional sports club or corporation can build an esports operation around an existing brand, audience, or commercial infrastructure. In 2017, the New York Yankees announced a partnership with Vision Esports, describing plans to contribute marketing, sales, and partnership expertise across advertising, sponsorship, media and broadcast rights, merchandise, tickets, naming rights, and content. What do investors and strategic partners contribute?
Funding is only one possible contribution. An investor or partner may also provide business management, audience development, brand relationships, venues, technology, media production, or distribution. aXiomatic describes its approach as connecting publishers, teams, and service providers through investments, acquisitions, and strategic partnerships. That is the company’s description of its strategy, not an independent assessment of the results. aXiomatic
Sports organizations can contribute commercial capabilities as well. The Yankees–Vision announcement, for example, emphasized marketing, sales, and partnership experience. Whether those resources translate into lasting value depends on the specific agreement and its execution; the announcement alone cannot establish that outcome.
Public statements such as “invested in” or “partnered with” rarely disclose a full ownership table, voting rights, board appointments, or contractual terms. Don’t infer who can make which decisions from a headline. To understand a specific deal, distinguish:

- Equity: Who owns shares or another stake in the business?
- Control and governance: Who can appoint leaders or make major decisions under the organization’s governing arrangements?
- Operations: Who manages the team and its business day to day?
Do team owners own a spot in the league?
Not necessarily. A team’s participation in a particular league is subject to that league’s rules and the game publisher’s arrangements. A stake in a team should not be confused with an unconditional, permanent right to compete. Publishers may set admission criteria, participation obligations, and the payments or revenue shares attached to league membership.

Riot says its formal League of Legends team partnership model began in 2017. In Riot’s account, teams paid about $10 million to participate and received a share of league revenue. Riot also says the model required teams to raise significant capital and that player salaries grew faster than revenue, depleting cash reserves. It later described support measures including minimum guarantees and faster or deferred payments. A 2017 ESPN interview with Riot executives described a proposed $10 million franchise fee for the planned 2018 North American League of Legends Championship Series. The interview also reported a proposed allocation of 32.5% of overall revenues to teams and 35% to players. Riot’s VCT partner model
In its description of the Valorant Champions Tour (VCT) model, Riot says partner teams do not pay Riot directly to join. Instead, teams maintain their slots through activities such as marketing, broadcast content, fan activation, and player support. Riot says it provides a fixed annual stipend, a percentage of digital sales for esports content, prize pools for teams in international competitions, and additional incentives for certain marketing activity. How do esports teams make money?
Teams may earn money through a mix of league-related payments or revenue shares, digital-content sales, sponsorships, advertising, media and broadcast rights, merchandise, tickets, and original content. Prize money can be another source, but it is not a reliable stand-in for a team’s total revenue, profit, or value. S&P Global notes that tournament participation varies greatly among teams and that prize totals alone do not tell the full story.

PwC argues that franchise structures may reduce a team’s reliance on wins and prize money and support content or lifestyle-brand strategies. That is a business possibility, not a guarantee: the result for any organization depends on its league terms, audience, commercial execution, operating costs, and market conditions. Keep revenue, profit, and owner returns distinct. Revenue is money coming into the business; profit is what remains after expenses. An organization that receives investment or participates in a high-profile league may still face substantial costs. Riot’s account of salaries outpacing revenue in its League of Legends partnership model is one example of why funding and league access do not, by themselves, establish that a team is sustainable.

For a specific team, compare the arrangements on their actual terms rather than assuming that a particular label—such as “franchise,” “partner,” or “acquisition”—settles the question.

Riot’s historical discussion of the LCS application process also shows that its evaluation extended beyond the ability to pay a fee: ESPN reported that Riot considered operations, revenue streams, cost controls, player support, and fan engagement. That account concerns the planned 2018 North American LCS and should not be treated as a description of every league’s current process.

What ownership examples can—and cannot—tell you
Named deals make the different arrangements easier to understand, but their dates and sources matter. aXiomatic’s Team Liquid announcement is evidence of a controlling-interest acquisition in 2016 alongside founders’ continued roles; it does not establish current ownership. The Yankees’ release establishes what was announced in 2017, not the arrangement’s later status. S&P Global’s corporate and football-club examples reflect the period covered by its analysis. For a present-day ownership claim, use a current company filing or official announcement rather than projecting an older example forward.
Historical financial figures need the same care. Riot’s approximately $10 million participation fee concerned the League of Legends model it says began in 2017. The separate $10 million LCS fee was a proposed figure in a 2017 interview about the planned 2018 North American system. Neither is evidence of a current fee across esports. Likewise, prize-pool figures describe tournament awards, not team operating income or owner returns.
What a 2026 partnership perspective adds
In a 2026 interview, Astralis co-founder Jakob Kristensen discussed player-owned, public-company, and private-organization stages as part of the team’s history. Asked what makes a partnership valuable, he emphasized “a mutual understanding of what success looks like and an approach and desire to bring value to the community.” That is one executive’s perspective on partnership quality, not a comprehensive account of ownership structures or a legal record of current stakeholders.
