For the main monkey-catching adventures, play the numbered games in release order: Ape Escape, Ape Escape 2, then Ape Escape 3. The PSP games Ape Escape Academy and Ape Academy 2 are optional minigame-focused spinoffs, not prerequisites.
Recommended order for the main Ape Escape games
- Ape Escape — the original PlayStation adventure, released in 1999.
- Ape Escape 2 — the PlayStation 2 sequel.
- Ape Escape 3 — the third numbered PlayStation 2 adventure.
Release order is a clear, spoiler-safe route through the numbered games. It is a practical recommendation, not a claim that every franchise entry fits a definitive story chronology; the series includes side games, and a complete cross-franchise chronology is not established by the available sources.
Are the Ape Escape Academy games required?
No. Ape Escape Academy and Ape Academy 2 are portable party and minigame spinoffs, so you can skip them while following the numbered adventures.
- Ape Escape Academy began on PSP and, according to Sony’s US PlayStation Store listing, is built around 50 minigames.
- Ape Academy 2 also began on PSP. Sony’s US listing describes a collectible card game and more than 100 minigames.
They may be worth a side trip if you want a different, minigame-centered take on the series, but neither needs to come before Ape Escape 2.
