Yes, conditionally: Masters of Albion is worth considering if you enjoy god games and are comfortable playing an unfinished, changing build. Its October 1, 2026 New Beginnings update substantially reworked the opening, progression and night defence, and Chapter One can be played from start to finish. It is not the finished game, however, and players seeking a polished release—or reliable Steam Deck play—should wait.
What kind of game is Masters of Albion?
Masters of Albion is a single-player simulation and strategy game developed and published by 22cans. It combines town management with direct control of characters: from an isometric god-game view, you can shape settlements and their production, then possess heroes, workers and other beings to act in the world.
The central loop moves between building and running towns, hiring and housing workers, operating businesses and production lines, designing products for orders, exploring as a hero, and defending settlements at night. Its setting is an Albion changed by modern technology as magic returns, with the corrupting Orken Stone threatening the land.
That mix is the game’s main appeal—and its main fit question. It is not just a city builder or a conventional action RPG: you need to want both broad settlement control and hands-on excursions and defence. A March 2026 PC Gamer preview compared its design lineage with Fable, Black & White and Dungeon Keeper. That was a pre-release comparison, not a current assessment of combat after version 2.0.

What does the New Beginnings update change?
Released October 1, 2026, New Beginnings (version 2.0) is a major rework rather than a small content drop. 22cans says it responded to feedback about performance, repetitive nights, shallow progression and interactions that did not feel satisfying.
- Opening: The start is now an expanded prologue with new locations, choices and lore.
- Orders and making products: Random product orders were replaced by story-led job series from different order givers, and the product-design table was redesigned.
- World threat: Corruption now spreads through Albion.
- Night defence: Encounters now revolve around objectives and offer lasting reward cards. Objectives can include defeating a set number of enemies, surviving for a limited time or escorting worshippers.
These changes give the game clearer progression and more varied reasons to engage with its systems. They do not establish that every part of the experience is finished: 22cans says it still plans to refine combat, difficulty balance, alignment, optional quests, the interface and progression, and may add crafting or production work.

How much content is playable now?
The Steam Early Access description says Chapter One is playable from beginning to end. That means there is a complete playable chapter, not the promised final game or a settled account of its eventual scope. 22cans estimates roughly 12 months in Early Access, while explicitly noting that the schedule may change; treat that as a current estimate, not a release date.
The studio plans to open additional areas of the world while continuing to develop the game. If you buy now, the sensible expectation is a substantial evolving experience whose systems, balance and content can change—not a fixed version of the finished product.

How does it run on PC, and what about Steam Deck?
Studio-reported performance improvements
For version 2.0, 22cans says it replaced the rendering system and rebuilt or converted game assets. The studio reports up to double the frame rate in its tests, but says results vary by hardware, resolution and settings. In PC Gamer’s October 1, 2026 report, Peter Molyneux described results against the recommended-spec target as averaging “between 60 and 80 frames.” That is his attributed report, not an independently measured benchmark or a guarantee for every PC.

Steam warns that stable performance is not guaranteed below the minimum specifications. The requirements are the listing’s specifications, not a promise of a particular frame rate.
Steam Deck compatibility
In a May 2026 report, PC Gamer said the game was rated Unsupported because its graphics settings could not be configured to run well on Steam Deck. 22cans acknowledged that the build did not meet Valve’s performance threshold and said it planned to seek re-verification after optimization. The studio later described a resubmission as planned, but that is not confirmation of a changed rating. Check the live Steam Deck compatibility badge before buying; the cited Unsupported status is from May 2026 and may have changed.

What should you check before buying?
Early Access means the game can change
Steam warns that the game is unfinished and may change significantly. 22cans specifically identifies combat, balance and UI among the areas still subject to iteration. Buy now if being part of an evolving game is acceptable to you; wait if you expect a polished, stable release.
Version 2.0 requires a new save
The update changes structure and progression, so version 1.4 saves cannot be loaded in version 2.0. 22cans said the 1.4 branch would remain available through Steam for one month after the update. If you have an older save, check which branch you are launching before continuing it.
Review the content disclosure
Steam’s developer-authored disclosure mentions adult language, graphic violence, alcohol use, an image of a beheaded dog, an execution choice and crude gestures.
Who should play it now—and who should wait?
Consider playing now if you want the combination of god-hand town control, production, hero possession, exploration and settlement defence, and you are willing to see systems evolve during Early Access. The post-update recommendation from PC Gamer writer Robert Jones is also positive for god-game fans, but it is one reviewer’s judgment, not a review-score consensus.
Wait if your priority is a finished game, settled balance and interface, or a confirmed Steam Deck experience. It may also be a poor match if you want only city building or only hero combat: the appeal lies in moving between those modes, not in either one alone.
