Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered is presented by CD PROJEKT RED as a free upgrade for owners on “qualifying platforms.” Its current FAQ names PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2, but does not define which editions or storefront purchases qualify. The publisher also advertises visual, combat, progression, modding, and photo-mode changes. Keep this release distinct from the separate 2022 version 4.0 next-gen update: its published frame-rate targets and detailed specifications are not confirmed specifications for Remastered.
Is The Witcher 3 Remastered a free upgrade?
CD PROJEKT RED’s current product page says: “Upgrade to Remastered for free if you own The Witcher 3 on qualifying platforms.” That is a conditional promise, not a guarantee that every past copy or edition qualifies. The page’s FAQ does not specify which storefront purchases or editions meet the condition, or provide platform-by-platform upgrade steps.
If you own the game, check its listing in your platform library or store and consult CD PROJEKT RED’s current support information. The available official FAQ does not establish eligibility for a specific legacy SKU, so ownership alone is not enough to confirm that your copy qualifies.

How is Remastered different from the 2022 version 4.0 update?
The names refer to different official materials. The current product page presents The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered; CD PROJEKT RED’s December 12, 2022 version 4.0 changelog describes the earlier next-gen update. Its detailed features and performance targets should not be attributed to the current Remastered release unless the publisher confirms them for that release.

The 2022 changelog said version 4.0 launched for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, with an update also planned for PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. It cautioned that the scope could vary by platform. Its documented features included:
- Ray-traced global illumination and ambient occlusion on PC and next-gen consoles; compatible PC hardware could also use ray-traced reflections and shadows.
- PC-only Ultra+ graphics settings and DLSS 3 support on compatible hardware.
- PS5 and Xbox Series X targets of 30 FPS in ray-tracing mode and 60 FPS in performance mode, with dynamic resolution scaling. These are targets from the 2022 changelog, not verified Remastered performance figures.
- Xbox Series S quality and performance mode targets of 30 FPS and 60 FPS, respectively; the changelog listed no ray-tracing features for Series S.
- PS5 DualSense adaptive triggers and haptic feedback.
- Cross-progression after account sign-in, cloud upload of the latest saves, photo mode, pausing during cutscenes, a closer adaptive camera, Quick Sign Casting, and map and HUD options.
- Additional quests and Netflix-inspired content, alternate looks, and Chinese and Korean voice-over. Console voice-over availability varied by region.
For the historical context, CD PROJEKT RED’s November 14, 2022 announcement said the free next-gen update was for existing owners and described a Complete Edition containing the base game, enhancements, free DLC, and both expansions. It named digital PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC releases and said a physical release would follow. That announcement establishes a historical physical Complete Edition, not a physical edition or current listing for Remastered.

What happens to the expansions, saves, and Complete Edition?
The current FAQ says owners of the base game can install Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine by updating to the latest version. It says the expansions are available to download for free on PS4 and Xbox One; existing expansion owners keep them in their libraries, with their content patched into the base game.
The FAQ also says the storefront base game has been replaced by the Complete Edition, save files remain compatible, Cross Progression remains functional, and expansion achievements and trophies are unaffected. These statements concern the game and expansions; they do not establish that a particular copy qualifies for the Remastered upgrade.

How to check your copy without assuming it qualifies
- Identify where you own The Witcher 3 and which edition appears in that platform’s library.
- Check the current store or library listing for an upgrade option and read its eligibility terms.
- Compare the listing with CD PROJEKT RED’s current product FAQ. Its stated condition is ownership on a “qualifying platform,” but it does not enumerate qualifying editions or storefront SKUs.
- If the listing does not clarify eligibility, consult the publisher’s current support material rather than assuming a past purchase is included.
