Start at Settings > Storage to check how much space is available and what is using it. The quickest option is usually to delete an installed game or app you no longer need; you can download purchased games and apps again from your game library. If you want to keep a PS5 game installed but off the console, move it to USB extended storage as an archive. To play PS5 games directly from extra storage, use a compatible internal M.2 SSD.
Check what is taking up space
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Storage.
- Review the available space and storage categories to see what is consuming capacity.
- Open Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps to review installed games and applications.
Menu wording can vary by console language or region; use the equivalent labels shown on your system.
Delete games or apps you can download again
Select a game or application you do not need right now and choose Delete. Removing its installation frees console storage, but does not remove your purchase: Sony says purchased games and apps can be downloaded again from the game library. This makes deletion a straightforward choice when you can reinstall the title later.
Remove only part of a game when available
Some games show a Customize option. If yours does, check whether it lets you remove unused add-ons or portions you have finished while keeping the rest installed. This is game-specific, so do not expect selective removal to be available for every title.

Choose the right place for games you want to keep

Use USB extended storage as an archive
To move a game, open Game Library > Options > Move Games and Apps. A PS5 game on USB extended storage cannot be launched there; move or copy it back to console storage or an M.2 SSD before playing. PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage.
Sony specifies a SuperSpeed USB connection of 5 Gbps or later and a capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB for USB extended storage, but not every drive is guaranteed to work. Formatting a drive erases its existing data, so back up anything you need before formatting it for this use.

Add an M.2 SSD for games you want ready to play
A compatible M.2 SSD can store, download and run PS5 games. Sony Support says PS5 games are playable from M.2 SSD storage and can be downloaded directly to it. To choose it for new installs, use Settings > Storage > Installation Location. Sony’s storage overview says compatible M.2 expansion can take PS5 storage capacity up to 8 TB; that is a stated maximum, not a guarantee that any 8 TB drive will fit or work. Check the current requirements for your PS5 model before buying: M.2 SATA SSDs are unsupported.

PlayStation Plus cloud storage holds saved data, not installed games or download files, so deleting cloud saves is not a way to make room for a game installation. Sony lists limits of up to 100 GB of PS5 saved data and 100 GB of PS4 saved data; the PS4 limit also includes a maximum of 1,000 saved-data files. Those limits concern saves, not game downloads.
