The company says a separate team is making it to sit alongside RuneScape and Old School RuneScape (OSRS), and that the project does not change its focus, commitment, or resources for those existing games. That is Jagex’s stated plan—not a guarantee about future execution. A release date, final name, platforms, gameplay, account links, and monetization have not been announced.
What Jagex revealed about RS4
At the close of its RuneFest livestream on 3 October 2026, Jagex announced that work is underway on a new RuneScape MMORPG. Its community post calls the project “RS4! (working title),” so RS4 is not confirmed as the final name. Read Jagex’s announcement, “New RS MMO In Development & What This Means For You.”
The announcement is an early development update, not a product specification. Jagex says it is too early to answer many questions; it does not establish a launch window, feature list, final platforms, progression systems, or business model.
Does RS4 mean RS3 or OSRS is being replaced?
Jagex says the new MMO is being developed by a separate team and is intended to “live alongside our existing MMOs.” It also says: “There’s no change in focus, commitment or resources we’re putting into RS & OS to support this.” That is the clearest available answer to concerns about the current games: Jagex says it does not plan to divert its stated support away from RuneScape or OSRS because of this reveal. The announcement cannot guarantee how the company will execute that commitment over time.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The announcement does not say that RS4 will replace RuneScape (commonly called RS3 by players), nor that it will shut down OSRS. It describes coexistence with the existing games, not a transition plan.
What existing-game plans tell players—and what they don’t
Jagex’s January 2026 RS25 materials frame the franchise as a portfolio of games and experiences, including separate investment and plans for RuneScape, OSRS, and RuneScape: Dragonwilds. That provides context for an additional MMO, but it is not a detailed RS4 roadmap. Jagex also reported more than 300 million cumulative player accounts across the franchise; that is not an active-player count, a count of unique people, or evidence of RS4 demand. See Jagex’s RS25 announcement.

Old School RuneScape
OSRS launched in 2013 from a 2007 snapshot after community demand, and Jagex describes player voting as part of how major changes are decided. Its 2026 roadmap includes new Sailing content, a Grandmaster quest, a new raid, and a returning League. These are OSRS plans—not confirmation that RS4 will use OSRS’s voting system or inherit its design. See Jagex’s OSRS news and roadmap.
RuneScape
RuneScape has its own 2026 rejuvenation plans, including UI and visual-integrity updates, combat modernisation, rebalancing, and other systems changes. Jagex also said Treasure Hunter would be removed following a 2025 community vote. These are plans for RuneScape, not announced features or monetization decisions for RS4. See Jagex’s RuneScape news and roadmap.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to read the announcement as a current player
For now, there is no announced change to how players access or progress in RuneScape or OSRS. Jagex’s statement is that the new project will coexist with them and that support for both existing games remains unchanged. Keep the distinction clear between that stated commitment and details Jagex has not yet disclosed; the reveal alone does not answer what RS4 will play like or how it will connect to the current games.
