How Golf Tee Times Work: Groups, Starting Tees, and Round Order

A tee time schedules your group’s start. Learn how normal, split-tee and shotgun starts change where groups begin and how they move through a round.

A golf tee time is the scheduled start for you or your group. Most rounds begin at the first tee, with groups leaving one after another at intervals set by the course. A split-tee start sends groups from both the first and 10th tees; a shotgun start sends groups out from several holes at once, usually for an organized event.

What a tee time means

Your tee time is the time assigned for your group to start playing, not a guarantee that every course uses the same spacing or party-size rules. Check your booking confirmation for the date, course, group size and starting tee. If the starting hole is not clear, ask the pro shop or starter.

Intervals and group limits are local policies. For example, PGA WEST says its La Quinta Resort & Club and PGA WEST properties send foursomes off at nine-minute intervals and do not allow fivesomes. That is a venue-specific policy, not a universal golf rule. PGA WEST course information

How groups proceed in a normal start

Sequential start from the first tee

In the ordinary arrangement, groups start at hole 1 in the order shown on the booking sheet. Each group proceeds through the numbered holes, and the next group starts when its slot arrives and the course is ready. Courses set their own interval; the Rules of Golf do not prescribe one standard number of minutes between tee times.

Split-tee start from holes 1 and 10

A split-tee arrangement runs two starting sequences at once: one from hole 1 and another from hole 10. A group beginning on 10 plays holes 10 through 18, then continues at hole 1 when the turn is clear and local instructions allow. It is an operational arrangement, often reflected on the booking or starting sheet—not a guarantee that a course offers 10th-tee starts to walk-up players. The R&A discusses pace monitoring for groups starting from holes 1 and 10 in its pace-of-play guidance.

What a shotgun start means

In a shotgun start, groups begin at the same time from multiple assigned holes. Each group plays forward through the course, wrapping from 18 to 1 where necessary, and completes the holes before its starting point. For instance, a group assigned to hole 7 plays 7 through 18, then 1 through 6.

Organizers use this format so a field can finish at roughly the same time; it is common at club and corporate events. The starting assignment, whether the event reserves the whole course, and whether other tee times remain available depend on the event and venue. Follow the event’s starting sheet rather than assuming every group starts at hole 1. The R&A pace-of-play manual

How the start formats differ

Format Where groups start How starts are arranged Typical logistics
Sequential Hole 1 Groups leave in booked order at the course’s interval Groups reach the turn after holes 1–9
Split tee Holes 1 and 10 Two sequences run concurrently The 10th-tee sequence plays 10–18, then turns to hole 1 when permitted
Shotgun Multiple assigned holes Groups start simultaneously Used to have an event field finish at roughly the same time; course access is event-specific

What to do before your tee time

  1. Check your confirmation. Verify the date, time, course, group size and starting tee. A hole number or “back nine” start may mean your group begins on hole 10.
  2. Follow the venue’s arrival and check-in instructions. The USGA recommends reaching the starting tee about 10 minutes before the scheduled time; the course may give additional directions. USGA pace-of-play advice
  3. Ask if plans change. If a player is late, your group is incomplete, or you cannot find the assigned tee, contact the pro shop or starter. Do not assume you can trade places with another group.
  4. For an event, use its starting sheet and rules. Event organizers determine starting holes and format, and the starter’s directions take precedence for local logistics.

Playing order once the round begins

During stroke play, ready golf can help a group keep pace: players may play when ready if it is safe and they are not deliberately playing out of order to gain an advantage. Follow the event’s rules and the starter’s directions. USGA guidance on pace of play
