Choose the platform for the specific RPG, not the platform you assume is best. First confirm the game’s platforms and release timing on its official listing; then weigh the hardware you already own, where you want to play, version-specific features and performance, and the full local cost. No platform is universally best for upcoming RPGs, and availability can differ by title.
Start by checking whether the RPG is actually coming to your platform
Publishers do not announce every RPG for every system, and a planned release is not the same as a confirmed current release. Check the game’s official announcement or store listing for the exact platform, version, region, and date. Recheck close to purchase because schedules and availability can change.
Recent announcements illustrate the variation. On January 22, 2026, Xbox Wire listed Fable for autumn 2026 on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Xbox Cloud, Steam, and PlayStation 5, and identified it as Xbox Play Anywhere. Sega’s September 2026 announcement listed Persona 6 for Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Series X|S, Windows, PS5, Steam, and Switch 2, but said its release date was undecided. Those lists are examples, not a complete release calendar.
Square Enix announced Final Fantasy VII Rebirth for Switch 2 and Xbox on June 3, 2026, in addition to PS5 and PC, and named Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming support. Since that announcement date has passed, check its current official store listing and regional status before treating it as upcoming or available. Bandai Namco announced on August 28, 2026 that Elden Ring Tarnished Edition was available on Switch 2, with new content also purchasable for Elden Ring on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. The same announcement said the original Elden Ring had sold more than 30 million units; that figure describes the game’s sales, not the relative merits of its platforms.

Compare the versions against how you will actually play
Use hardware you already own as the baseline
If your current PC or console is confirmed to support the RPG, compare the incremental cost of playing there with the cost of buying another system. A new platform may be worthwhile for other reasons, but do not count its full price as an RPG-specific benefit unless the games and features you want justify it.
Choose Switch 2 for portability only when the game’s version suits you
Switch 2 can make an RPG easier to play away from a TV or desk, but portability alone does not establish how a particular game runs. Nintendo’s RuneScape: Dragonwilds listing documents TV, tabletop, and handheld modes on Switch 2. Check the target RPG’s listing and reliable testing for its actual performance and controls. Also verify the exact model: Nintendo notes on an official listing that Switch Lite compatibility or play experience can differ, so “Switch” should not be treated as a single interchangeable version.

Check PC requirements rather than guessing from the label
For PC, compare your actual hardware with the developer’s minimum and recommended requirements for the exact RPG. Without the game and your PC configuration, there is no sound basis for claiming that your system will run it well or recommending an upgrade.
Look for testing of the exact game before ranking performance
When multiple versions are available, compare reliable testing of that game for resolution, frame rate, loading, stability, and controls. A platform-wide reputation cannot establish how a particular port performs, and no matched performance comparison is established here.

Verify online play, saves, and ownership terms game by game
Online access, cloud saves, cross-play, cross-progression, and cross-device ownership are not universal platform features. Read the game’s own listing and support information before choosing based on any of them.
- Nintendo’s RuneScape: Dragonwilds listing associates online play and Save Data Cloud with Nintendo Switch Online membership. Check whether the RPG you want has the same or different requirements.
- Xbox Wire describes Fable as Xbox Play Anywhere. That is a title-specific ownership feature, not a rule for every Xbox game or for competing platforms.
- In an Xbox Wire announcement dated January 8, 2026, Xbox Game Studios Publishing described a specific change for Towerborne: “With this full game update, Towerborne shifts from its original vision as a free-to-play, always online title into a buy once, offline game – you will own the complete experience permanently, with offline play and online co-op.” It is an example of why online and ownership conditions should be checked for each game, not generalized across a platform.
Compare the complete cost and edition, not just the system
Once at least two versions are confirmed, compare what each one costs in your region and what is included. Add the game edition, any required online service, and any storage or accessories you actually need to the hardware cost. Check edition contents on the game’s own store pages; similarly named editions or release announcements do not prove that every platform has identical content.

A practical decision order
- Confirm availability and timing. Check the publisher’s current platform list, date, and regional store page for the exact game.
- Rule out unsuitable versions. Check PC requirements, console model compatibility, and any game-specific online or save requirements.
- Start with your existing setup. Compare the cost of playing on hardware you own with the cost of a new system.
- Match the version to your play setting. Decide whether handheld, tabletop, TV, or desk play matters most, and verify the game supports the mode and experience you want.
- Compare tested performance and controls. Use evidence for the exact game and versions, not platform-wide assumptions.
- Calculate the full local cost. Include the game edition and any required service, storage, or accessory, then choose the version whose confirmed features are worth that cost to you.
