Before preordering an RPG, verify the exact game, platform, edition and format, then compare what you receive with the price and the seller’s payment, cancellation and delivery terms. A preorder is worth considering when a specific bonus, physical edition or other confirmed benefit matters to you; otherwise, waiting for reviews or launch may be the better fit.
Start by confirming exactly what you are buying
Listings for games with similar names or editions can look alike without representing the same product. Before checkout, match the full game title, platform and edition, and check whether the item is the complete game, a bundle or an upgrade. Do not infer cross-platform or cross-generation access from the word “RPG” or from an edition name; look for explicit compatibility details in the listing.
- Confirm the storefront and region as well as the product name.
- Check that the edition is playable on the platform you own.
- Distinguish the full game from an upgrade, add-on or bundle.
Compare editions by their actual contents
Read each edition’s included-content list and total price. Separate playable expansions or other content you would use from cosmetics, in-game currency and promotional extras. Marketing labels alone do not establish what an edition contains or whether its additions are worth the difference; the listing for the particular game is the source to check.
When comparing purchase routes, put the details side by side:

Check whether “physical” means a disc or cartridge
Do not assume a physical listing includes a disc or cartridge. Nintendo’s support page treats digital eShop pre-orders and physical pre-purchases as separate purchase routes, but it does not establish the contents of an unnamed game’s package. Inspect the specific retailer listing for the format supplied, including whether it instead provides a download code or another form of access. Nintendo: Pre-Orders and Pre-Purchases
Read the preorder bonus terms
A bonus is useful only if you qualify for it and understand how it will arrive. Check which edition and platform are eligible, the purchase deadline, whether the bonus comes as a code or an account entitlement, and whether it is exclusive to preorder or available later. Nintendo’s FAQ describes bonus content for some games and addresses preorder bonus codes; it is not a promise that every RPG preorder includes a bonus. Nintendo: eShop Pre-Order and Pre-Load FAQ

Find out when you will be charged
Payment timing depends on the seller and purchase type. For example, Nintendo states that US digital eShop preorder payment occurs no sooner than seven days before release, while a physical pre-purchase is charged immediately. Those are Nintendo’s stated US terms, not a general rule for other stores or countries. Nintendo: Pre-Orders and Pre-Purchases
Before placing an order elsewhere, check its checkout information and preorder policy for the charge date, payment authorization requirements and what happens if a payment fails. Do not assume that a digital preorder is charged only near release or that a physical order is charged immediately.

Understand cancellation and refund limits before downloading
Cancellation windows can depend on the seller, country, order type and whether a download or preload has begun. The official policies below illustrate how different the terms can be; they are not universal rights, and local law may also apply.
- Nintendo US digital eShop: Nintendo says cancellation is possible before payment processing and pre-loading, up to seven days before release. Nintendo: eShop Pre-Order and Pre-Load FAQ
- PlayStation Store US digital preorder: Cancellation depends on payment timing and whether the main product has started downloading or streaming. Automatic downloads can affect eligibility. PlayStation Store cancellation policy
- Bandai Namco Store: Its FAQ says preorders can be canceled until eight days before release. It also describes returns for eligible unopened physical items within 30 days of receipt. Check the FAQ for the conditions that apply to your order. Bandai Namco Store FAQs
Read the current policy for the actual seller and your country before downloading, streaming or allowing automatic downloads. A policy for one storefront does not establish the terms of another.

For physical orders, check delivery and date changes
A physical preorder adds shipping and delivery considerations. Check the estimated arrival date, delivery territory, release-date-change handling and payment authorization requirements. PlayStation Direct says cancellation is generally possible until shipping begins, typically around six days before the scheduled release date, and notes that release dates may change. Check its current terms and the status of your own order rather than treating that timing as a retailer-wide rule. PlayStation Direct: Pre-Orders
Decide whether preordering has a concrete benefit for you
A preorder can make sense if you specifically want a limited physical edition or a confirmed bonus, or if a digital preorder’s stated benefits matter to you. Balance those benefits against the seller’s cancellation terms and the option of waiting for reviews or buying after launch. Do not assume a digital copy will sell out or that you must preorder unless the specific game’s circumstances establish that.
