On Windows with the Steam version, SEGA’s support procedure is to back up the Creative Assembly folder, test the game with a fresh folder, and restore saves only if the test works. For routine mod management, use the installed Mod Manager’s save profiles if available, or keep a manual record of each campaign’s active mods.
Back up saves and settings before troubleshooting
SEGA’s Steam troubleshooting guide gives this default Windows roaming folder:

Replace YOURUSERNAME with your Windows account name. The guide is for Windows and Steam; other operating systems and storefronts may use different locations or procedures.

- Exit the game.
- Open the Creative Assembly folder at the path above. If
AppDatais hidden, enter the full path in File Explorer’s address bar. - Create a clearly named backup folder somewhere separate, such as on the desktop, then copy or move the Creative Assembly folder into it. Keep the backup intact while testing.
- Confirm that the backup contains the campaign saves you want to preserve before making further changes.
SEGA’s instructions use a desktop folder; an external drive is an optional way to keep a separate copy, not a requirement. This backup protects the relevant local files, but it does not guarantee that a campaign will load after its mods are removed.
Keep track of the mods used by each campaign
Mod setups can differ between campaigns. Before changing a working setup, record which mods are active and, where useful, their order or other settings shown in the launcher. A written list remains usable even if launcher features change.

Creative Assembly’s November 27, 2025 announcement for the Steam Early Access Mod Manager described saved and shareable profiles, selecting a save for “Continue Campaign,” and automatically activating the mods associated with that save. It also said the tool could have bugs, Workshop uploading was not yet available in that manager, and the original launcher would remain available during development. Those details describe the announced Early Access build, not necessarily the current October 2026 installation. Check the options in your installed launcher rather than assuming every feature is still available: Creative Assembly’s Mod Manager announcement.
Choose a management method

Creative Assembly has not published a comparative benchmark for these approaches. A profile is useful for remembering a setup; a file backup addresses a different risk.

After an update or a crash, test mods cautiously
Creative Assembly’s Hotfix 7.2.2 notice warns: “Please note that user-generated mods may have compatibility issues with new game updates.” It recommends disabling mods if an update is followed by performance or stability problems. SEGA also notes that Steam Workshop mods or changes to program files can interfere with operation, including when a mod has not been updated for the current game version.
- Preserve your backup and note the campaign’s active setup before changing anything.
- Temporarily disable mods and check whether the launch, stability, or performance issue changes. This is a troubleshooting test, not proof that a particular mod is responsible.
- If the game works without mods, check each mod’s current compatibility information before restoring it.
- Re-enable mods selectively, changing one variable at a time, and test whether the campaign loads before relying on the setup again.
This cautious process can help narrow down a cause, but it is not a guaranteed recovery method. Removing or changing mods can affect a campaign, and the official guidance does not promise that every save will load afterward.

Reset the Creative Assembly folder only when needed
SEGA’s Windows Steam troubleshooting procedure tests the game with a fresh Creative Assembly folder. Use it as a diagnostic step, not as a way to erase the original files:
- Exit the game and make sure your backup copy is intact.
- Create a new folder on the desktop, as SEGA’s instructions specify.
- Move the entire
The Creative Assemblyfolder out ofC:UsersYOURUSERNAMEAppDataRoamingand into that desktop folder. - Start the game and check whether it works with the fresh folder.
- If the test succeeds, copy the save folder from your backup into the newly created Creative Assembly location. Keep the backup until you have confirmed the result you need.
Because the test changes the files the game uses, do not delete the moved folder or backup simply because the game launches. The procedure is documented for Steam on Windows; if your installation differs, consult the support instructions for your platform and storefront. See SEGA’s Total War Steam troubleshooting guide.
