Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo stream a pre-recorded 4K 60fps video to YouTube Live from Ubuntu, use FFmpeg to read the file in real time, encode it to YouTube’s recommended settings, and send it to the RTMPS address and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. For H.264, YouTube recommends 50 Mbps at 4K/60; plan for at least 60 Mbps of sustained available upload to allow its recommended 20% headroom. That 60 Mbps is calculated from YouTube’s guidance, not a guarantee of performance on any Indian ISP.
Before you start: check channel access, file, and upload
Confirm YouTube Live eligibility
Check that live streaming is enabled for your channel before troubleshooting FFmpeg. YouTube’s eligibility guidance requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; it also states a minimum age of 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
Inspect the video and FFmpeg build
Use ffprobe to inspect the file’s video and audio streams, resolution, frame rate, and codecs. Confirm that it actually contains 3840×2160 video at 60 fps if that is the output you intend. Check that your installed FFmpeg includes libx264 and RTMPS/TLS support before relying on the example below. Ubuntu package builds, hardware, and media formats differ, so this is a starting point, not a universal command verified for every system.
Measure sustained upload capacity
Measure outbound upload under realistic conditions—not download speed—and compare it with the complete stream bitrate. YouTube advises leaving 20% headroom and warns that connection interruptions can break a live stream; see its streaming tips. For one H.264 video stream configured at YouTube’s 50 Mbps recommendation, 20% headroom means planning for at least 60 Mbps of sustained available upload, plus any additional audio or stream overhead. Actual performance in India varies by ISP, location, congestion, and routing; no particular connection is guaranteed to meet this requirement.

Choose a 4K/60 bitrate and encoder
YouTube’s current encoder settings distinguish the recommended bitrate by codec. Its figures are platform configuration guidance, not a promise that your computer can encode 4K/60 in real time.
| Video codec | YouTube 4K/2160p at 60 fps minimum | YouTube 4K/2160p at 60 fps recommendation | What to check locally |
|---|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps | Confirm the FFmpeg build includes libx264 and that the machine can encode the source at the needed cadence. |
| H.265/HEVC or AV1 | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps | Verify that your installed FFmpeg build has the relevant encoder and can sustain real-time 4K/60 encoding. |
These values come from YouTube Help’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. The lower minimum is not the recommended target. Do not use the 35 Mbps figure for an H.264 command: the example below uses H.264 and therefore sets video bitrate to 50 Mbps.

Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the live stream.
- Open the stream’s settings and copy its RTMPS server URL and associated stream key. YouTube describes finding the URL in Stream settings and revealing it with the lock control in its RTMPS setup instructions.
- Keep the key private like a password. Do not expose it in a public script, screenshot, shell history, support post, or shared log. Use the URL and key that belong to the same stream.
RTMPS is RTMP protected by TLS/SSL. If an otherwise correct RTMPS destination produces an SSL error, YouTube advises trying port 443; consult its current RTMPS instructions for the applicable server address.
Run FFmpeg at real-time speed
FFmpeg’s -re option reads file input at its native frame rate (equivalent to -readrate 1), which is useful when sending a file as a live feed. -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely. Both are input options, so place them before the relevant -i. The following illustrative H.264 template also uses FFmpeg’s documented RTMP/FLV-style output approach; replace every placeholder and adapt it to your file and build.

YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. The template’s encoding options should be checked against the installed encoder and actual media. YouTube’s current live encoder guidance is the authority for its target settings. FFmpeg documents -re, input looping, and command-line options in its command-line documentation and describes its format and protocol options.
Adapt the template when the source differs
If the file is not already 4K/60, has no audio, contains multiple audio tracks, or uses an unusual pixel format or codec, the template may need explicit stream mapping, scaling, frame-rate conversion, pixel-format conversion, or different audio handling. Do not assume that changing -r 60 restores detail or motion that the source does not contain. Hardware acceleration and encoding performance depend on the available machine and FFmpeg encoders; the settings cited here do not specify a required CPU, GPU, or encoder device.

Test the feed and monitor the live stream
- For a first run, use a private or unlisted test where appropriate.
- Start the FFmpeg command and check that it connects without exposing the key in any logs you share.
- Open the Live Control Room preview. Check picture, motion, audio, and stream health using a representative section of the recording.
- Keep monitoring the encoder and YouTube stream health during the event. A stable speed test alone does not prove that the connection will remain uninterrupted.
At 4K/2160, YouTube does not offer low-latency mode: its guidance says these streams are set to normal latency. Allow for that delay when checking the preview and coordinating the stream.
Troubleshoot common failures
- Channel cannot start a live stream: check verification, channel restrictions, and age eligibility against YouTube’s live-streaming requirements before changing encoder parameters.
- FFmpeg reports that an encoder or option is unavailable: inspect the installed build’s encoder support and confirm the command matches the build and Ubuntu package you have. A command option or codec not included in that build cannot be fixed by changing the YouTube stream key.
- Connection or authentication fails: confirm the destination is RTMPS, the URL and key are from the same Live Control Room stream, and the key was copied correctly. For an SSL error with an otherwise correct URL, check YouTube’s port 443 guidance in its RTMPS instructions.
- Stream health is unstable or drops: compare the total outgoing bitrate with sustained upload capacity and restore the recommended 20% headroom. Retest under the same network conditions; no particular Indian ISP or connection type guarantees uninterrupted delivery.
- Video stutters, looks wrong, or lacks sound: inspect the source with
ffprobe, then confirm the resolution, frame rate, audio stream, and chosen pixel format or mappings. Adapt conversion and mapping options to the media rather than assuming the template fits every file. - Keyframes or cadence do not match expectations: check the encoder’s effective frame rate and GOP behavior. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds; at 60 fps, two seconds is 120 frames.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want the prerecorded video to keep running without leaving an Ubuntu computer on, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service from Yorker Media. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no home computer, OBS, or home connection has to stay on.
