The documented Snipping Tool recording workflow is for Windows 11; Game Bar instructions cover Windows 10 and 11. These tools do not have identical documented capabilities. Choose based on your Windows version, whether you need to capture a selected area, your audio needs, and whether you want to edit the result. Record a selected area with Snipping Tool on Windows 11
- Open Snipping Tool from Start or taskbar search.
- Select Record, then New. You can also press Windows logo key + Shift + R to open the recording workflow.
- Select the area of the screen to capture, then select Start.
- Select Stop to finish.
- Save the recording, or select Edit in Clipchamp to continue editing.
Microsoft also documents using Clipchamp to add captions or audio to a video snip. The steps above follow Microsoft Support’s Snipping Tool instructions.
Record a game or app with Xbox Game Bar
- Open the game or app you want to record.
- Press Windows logo key + Alt + R to start recording. Press the same shortcut again to stop.
- To toggle the microphone during recording, press Windows logo key + Alt + M.
If Game Bar does not open, press Windows logo key + G to open the overlay; Game Bar may need to be enabled in Settings. Microsoft’s Xbox Game Bar guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Include microphone or system audio
Microphone
While recording with Game Bar, press Windows logo key + Alt + M to switch the microphone on or off.
System audio
Open Game Bar with Windows logo key + G, open Settings, go to Capturing, and set audio to All to include system audio. For a Snipping Tool capture, Microsoft describes Clipchamp as an option for adding audio after capture; that is editing, not the same control as Game Bar’s capture setting.

Find and edit your recording
Xbox Game Bar files
Game Bar saves recordings as MP4 files in VideosCaptures. The file name includes the game or app name and the recording date and time, according to Microsoft’s support instructions.
Snipping Tool clips
When you finish a Snipping Tool recording, save it or select Edit in Clipchamp. Clipchamp can be used for post-capture edits such as adding captions or audio, as described in Microsoft’s Snipping Tool guidance.

Troubleshoot common problems
- You cannot find Snipping Tool: Search for it from Start or taskbar search. Microsoft says to get it from Microsoft Store if it is not installed or cannot be found.
- The Snipping Tool recording shortcut does not work: Confirm you are using Windows 11, which is the version covered by Microsoft’s recording instructions. The shortcut is Windows logo key + Shift + R.
- Game Bar does not appear: Press Windows logo key + G to open the overlay and check whether Game Bar needs to be enabled in Settings.
- Your Game Bar recording has no system audio: In Game Bar, open Settings > Capturing and select All.
- You are following a Steps Recorder tutorial: Check the Windows version and the tutorial’s purpose. Microsoft says the Snipping Tool screen recorder was introduced on Windows 11 devices in 2023. Windows versions before the Windows 11 update in February 2024 continue to support Steps Recorder, but it is not a current general-purpose screen recorder for Windows 11.
