To judge a suspected illegal hit or kneeing play, start with the NHL rulebook—not a single replay angle. The 2025–26 Official Rules list Rule 48 as Illegal Check to the Head and Rule 50 as Kneeing. The available Rule 48 wording says head contact is prohibited when the head was the main point of contact and that contact was avoidable; it does not say every hit involving the head is illegal. For kneeing, consult the current rulebook’s Rule 50 text and the NHL’s video explainer rather than relying on a guessed definition.

Where Rules 48 and 50 fit

The contents of the NHL’s 2025–26 Official Rules identify Rule 48 as Illegal Check to the Head and Rule 50 as Kneeing. The contents confirm the rule names, but the full current PDF text is not available here to verify the exact definitions and penalty provisions.

The NHL also publishes short video explainers for Rule 48 and Rule 50. Use them alongside the written rule: a video can help illustrate how the league presents a rule, while the current rulebook remains the source for its wording.

How to read Rule 48: Illegal Check to the Head

The accessible 2024–25 Official Rules state: “A hit resulting in contact with an opponent’s head where the head was the main point of contact and such contact to the head was avoidable is not permitted.” That is prior-edition wording, not proof that every phrase is unchanged in 2025–26. Read the current rulebook for the controlling text.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The prior-edition test has two essential parts: the head must have been the main point of contact, and the contact must have been avoidable. The NHL’s 2024–25 Official Rules also identify circumstances to consider when assessing avoidability.

1. Was there contact with the head?

Establish whether the opponent’s head was contacted. A clip showing head contact answers only this first question; it does not, on its own, establish an illegal check under the quoted Rule 48 wording.

2. Was the head the main point of contact?

Consider whether the hit was principally directed at the head, rather than head contact occurring incidentally during a check through the opponent’s body. This is a question about the nature of the contact, not simply whether the head moved or appeared to snap back.

3. Was the contact avoidable in the circumstances?

The rule’s stated considerations include whether the checker attempted to hit squarely through the opponent’s body, the opponent’s posture, and whether the opponent materially changed body or head position immediately before or at the time of the hit. These factors call for looking at the play as it unfolded, not treating one still frame or one visual cue as a complete ruling.

The NHL’s Rule 48 video explainer and its Department of Player Safety Rule 48 review can provide context when comparing the written test with a play. A viewer can use the three questions to organize an assessment, but should avoid declaring a definitive ruling from a short clip alone.

How to read Rule 50: Kneeing

The 2025–26 rulebook contents identify Rule 50 as Kneeing, and the NHL’s Video Rulebook page for Rule 50 provides an official kneeing explainer dated September 23, 2024. The exact current Rule 50.1 definition and penalty text are not verified here, so no detailed definition, penalty progression, or automatic-suspension rule should be inferred from the title alone.

On-ice penalties and later discipline are separate

An on-ice penalty is an officials’ decision under the rules during a game. Supplemental discipline is a separate league decision. In an April 17, 2025 announcement, the NHL said Jesse Puljujärvi received a two-game suspension for an illegal check to the head of Mitchell Chaffee: NHL Public Relations announcement. That case demonstrates that supplemental discipline can follow a head-contact incident; it does not establish an automatic suspension or a fixed result for every similar-looking play.
