What Happens After an NHL Player Is Ejected for a Knee-on-Knee Hit?

An NHL knee-on-knee hit does not automatically mean an ejection. A major for kneeing requires a game misconduct, while separate Player Safety review can lead to additional discipline.

In the NHL, a knee-on-knee collision does not automatically eject a player. If the referee assesses a major penalty for kneeing, Rule 50 requires a game misconduct, which removes the player for the rest of that game. The NHL Department of Player Safety may then review the play separately and impose additional discipline, including a suspension.

What causes the in-game ejection?

NHL Rule 50.1 defines kneeing as “the act of a player leading with his knee and in some cases extending his leg outwards to make contact with his opponent.” The referee judges the severity of the play: kneeing may draw a minor or a major penalty. A match penalty is available when the referee judges that the player attempted to injure an opponent or deliberately injured one by kneeing.

A major penalty for kneeing carries a game misconduct under Rule 50.5. The game misconduct means the player is removed for the remainder of that game. The collision itself does not establish that a major or match penalty must be called.

Can the NHL review the hit after the game?

Yes. The Department of Player Safety monitors games and reviews plays that may warrant supplemental discipline. It can act whether or not an on-ice penalty was called, and its later disciplinary decision does not have to use the same categorization as the officials’ call. NHL Rule 50: Kneeing and the Department of Player Safety FAQs describe the rule and review process.

The NHL identifies several considerations under CBA Article 18.2; they are factors, not a formula that mechanically dictates a suspension:

  • The nature of the conduct, including whether it was intentional or reckless and whether the force was excessive or unnecessary.
  • Whether the play caused an injury.
  • The player’s prior discipline history.
  • The circumstances of the game and other appropriate factors.

What happens during a supplemental-discipline review?

The NHL may interview the player and representatives about the play. The Department’s FAQ says it does not decide supplemental discipline until the player has had an opportunity to explain. The hearing format described by the NHL depends on the possible punishment:

It also describes a further appeal to a neutral arbitrator for suspensions of six or more games. A player remains suspended while an appeal is pending, subject to the suspension term ending.

What does a recent kneeing case show?

On March 17, 2026, NHL.com reported that Ducks defenseman Radko Gudas received a five-game suspension for kneeing Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews. The report said Matthews sustained a grade 3 MCL tear and a quad contusion, ending his season. This is one outcome, not a standard penalty for knee-on-knee contact. In discussing the decision, Department of Player Safety head George Parros said the league looks first at the play, then considers player history and whether there was an injury. NHL.com’s March 17, 2026 report describes the case.

How to compare two kneeing incidents

Different outcomes can reflect differences in the on-ice penalty, the conduct, the resulting injury, the player’s record, and game circumstances. The NHL describes these as relevant considerations, not as a point system. The FAQ’s description of a video room with 25 monitors (2023) concerns its review setup; it does not indicate how often a player is suspended or how severe a decision will be.
