To make and post a YouTube Short, create a square or vertical video no longer than three minutes, then upload it in the YouTube app or YouTube Studio. You can record and edit on your phone, or upload a clip you edited elsewhere. Before publishing, check the title, visibility and audience setting.
Check that your video will count as a Short
For standard channels, square or vertical videos up to three minutes long uploaded on or after October 15, 2024 are classified as Shorts. Earlier uploads keep their original classification. Official Artist Channels have a separate December 8, 2025 cutoff. YouTube’s current rules are explained in Understand three-minute YouTube Shorts.
- Want a Short? Use a square or vertical frame and keep the video at three minutes or less.
- Want a regular wide-format video? YouTube says a wider aspect ratio such as 16:9 can prevent Shorts classification.
A focused opening, one central idea, readable text and a clear ending can make a clip easier to follow. Treat these as production choices, not guarantees of views or reach.
Choose how to make and upload it
| Option | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube app | Recording or editing on a phone | The upload flow includes trimming and options for text, filters, music or other audio, plus title, privacy and audience settings. |
| YouTube Studio on a computer | Uploading an existing, finished edit | The file must be square or vertical and no longer than three minutes. You can select up to 15 Shorts at a time. |
YouTube says no special equipment is needed: “You don’t need any special equipment to get started! You can record, edit, and upload all from your phone.” A tripod is optional if you want hands-free, steadier framing.

Make and post a Short in the YouTube app
- Sign in to the YouTube app, tap Create, then Upload a video.
- Select a square or vertical video. If it is longer than three minutes, choose Edit into a Short and trim it to three minutes or less. Videos up to three minutes can also be trimmed in the editor.
- Tap Next to open the editor. Add text, filters, music or other audio if useful. In the Android upload flow documented by YouTube, audio chosen from its library is limited to 15-second clips.
- Add a title of up to 100 characters, choose a privacy setting, and indicate whether the video is made for kids.
- Review the details and tap Upload.
Check visibility rather than assuming it is public: YouTube’s cited Android help page says the default is private for creators aged 13–17 and public for creators 18 or older. Defaults may differ by account or interface.
Upload a Short from a computer
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Select Create, then Upload videos.
- Choose a square or vertical video that is no longer than three minutes.
- Complete the draft details, including title, visibility and audience, before publishing. You can select up to 15 Shorts in one upload flow.
These are the menu labels in YouTube’s computer upload instructions. Labels and layouts can vary as YouTube updates Studio.

Choose audio carefully
For standard channels, songs from the Shorts Audio Library may be available for up to 90 seconds in a three-minute Short; some tracks are limited to 60 or 30 seconds. YouTube’s Audio Library also offers royalty-free tracks, which its help page says will not receive a Content ID claim. Check the available duration and terms for the specific track before editing around it.
Copyright claims still matter. YouTube’s help page says that, for new Shorts longer than one minute and shorter than three minutes uploaded starting September 24, 2026, an active Content ID claim will no longer automatically block the Short; it may remain playable. A claim can still affect availability, and a copyright removal request is a separate matter. If a Short is blocked, YouTube says you can remove the claimed material or dispute a claim you believe is mistaken; availability and monetization resume after resolution. See the current update in YouTube’s three-minute Shorts guidance.

Before you publish
- Confirm the frame is square or vertical and the final duration is within three minutes.
- Read the title and check the audience designation.
- Choose public, private or unlisted deliberately; a test upload can help you learn the workflow before sharing widely.
- If you post regularly, choose a schedule you can maintain. YouTube’s suggestion to use a schedule is not a promise that a particular frequency improves reach.
