First check that you entered exactly five letters and submitted the guess; if the word still fails, it may not be accepted by that particular game. Refreshing can help if the game has not synced with an update, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
Why does Wordle say a word is not valid?
Wordle checks guesses against a game-specific list, not every word in a general dictionary. An unaffiliated Wordle guide explains that a familiar English word may be rejected if it is outside the game’s accepted list; that is a useful explanation, not an official statement of NYT’s current list or its exact rules. The current complete list of accepted guesses and every exclusion rule are not established by the sources available here.
Do not assume that another word game’s dictionary explains Wordle’s behavior. The New York Times documents that its separate Crossplay game uses NWL 2023 and excludes trademarks and proper nouns, but that policy is for Crossplay, not Wordle. NYT Help Center: Crossplay
What to check before trying again
- Count the letters. The guess must contain exactly five letters. Discord Support states this requirement for its licensed Wordle Activity; its guide is not a complete specification of every platform’s controls. Discord Support: Wordle Activity
- Check the entry. Look for a typo, a missing letter, or an unintended extra character. Make sure the word displayed on the board is the word you meant to enter.
- Submit the guess. Use the Enter key or the on-screen submit control for the platform you are playing. Wordle’s controls can differ by platform.
- Consider the game’s accepted list. If the entry is five letters and submitted correctly, the word may simply not be accepted by that game’s list, even if it is a real term.
When should you refresh Wordle?
Refresh the page if a game update or stale page state is plausible. In February 2022, ABC News reported that the New York Times had changed the list of accepted five-letter solutions and relayed the NYT FAQ’s advice: “To ensure your game is in sync with the updated version, you can refresh the website where you play Wordle.” That is historical sync guidance, not proof that refreshing fixes every rejection today. Does the same rule apply on every Wordle site?
No. The licensed Discord Wordle Activity has the same daily puzzle as NYT Games, according to Discord Support, but that does not mean every unofficial Wordle clone uses the same accepted list or implementation. If the issue continues after checking the entry and refreshing, confirm which game you opened and consult that platform’s support. Discord Support: Wordle Activity
