If you mainly want free-to-play multiplayer and player-made content, look at Halo Infinite; if you want to explore fan-run Halo projects, consider ElDewrito with the caveats below.

These options suit different kinds of play; the available evidence does not establish an objective quality ranking or comparable player-population counts.
Why MCC is the broadest starting point
MCC collects six games in the original release order listed by Halo Support: Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2 Anniversary, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach, and Halo 4. Halo Waypoint lists 67 campaign missions and more than 120 multiplayer maps across the collection. Those counts describe the collection’s scope; they do not say which game or mode you will enjoy most.
Halo Support’s Quick Start Guide recommends beginning with Halo: CE Anniversary, while noting that players can choose whichever game they prefer. Release order is a useful default if you want to follow the series’ original progression; choosing a later game first is also an option.

How to start with MCC on PC
- Choose the collection and install the games you want. MCC is the Windows collection for playing these six entries on PC.
- For release order, open Campaigns and select Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary. This follows Halo Support’s suggested starting point.
- For a Workshop mod, open the MCC Steam Workshop. Check the mod’s game and mode compatibility and read its creator’s instructions before subscribing; some projects have additional setup steps.
- Launch “Halo MCC Anti-Cheat Disabled” from Steam. Halo Support says mods will not work unless Easy Anti-Cheat is disabled. Use the standard launch option when you want to play without mods.
Workshop entries are community projects, not a fixed, officially ranked list. The live catalog has included projects such as The Mona Lisa, Project Chozo Beta, and Civil Unrest: Firefight; check each listing for current compatibility and instructions before installing.
When Halo Infinite is the better choice
Choose Halo Infinite if your priority is free-to-play multiplayer and making or playing custom content rather than working through MCC’s classic campaigns. Xbox Wire’s 2021 PC overview documents Forge creation tools, custom games, Firefight, and cross-platform play. It also described more than 70 maps in matchmaking at that time; that is a dated figure from the article, not a current map count.

For current playlists, updates, service availability, and population, check current official information rather than relying on that older feature overview. No comparable current population figures are established for Infinite, MCC, or ElDewrito here, so there is no evidence-based basis for naming the busiest matchmaking option.

ElDewrito is a fan-made community modification for Halo Online, not an official retail Halo release. The project guide describes player-hosted servers, expanded Forge features, and mod synchronization. Halo Online itself was tested in 2015 but never fully released; the ElDewrito guide also records Microsoft’s 2018 request to temporarily halt development.
