If you cannot find that match, describe the image as unverified—not automatically official or fan-made. Appearance alone cannot establish who created or published it, and verifying its source does not give you permission to reuse it.
Start with the developer or publisher
Search the game’s official website for a press, media, news, or downloads page, then check the publisher’s equivalent. Look for the exact image in an official press kit, announcement, trailer, or verified social account. For example, Larian Studios’ press page lists game-specific press kits with screenshots and other assets; some entries include last-updated dates.
A match in a rights holder’s own press kit is strong evidence that it distributed that asset. Save the page address and note any date, caption, or game and platform context attached to it. A repost, search result, or similar-looking image is not the same as a match to the original source.
Compare the image and its context
Check whether the official page shows the same frame and composition, not merely a scene from the same game. Compare visible details such as character positions, interface elements, lighting, and cropping. Similarity can help you locate a possible source, but it does not prove that two files are identical or that a repost is authorized.

Keep the surrounding context with your assessment: who posted the image, where it appeared, and whether the post identifies it as a press asset, announcement image, or gameplay capture. An official account sharing an image is useful provenance evidence; a copy circulating elsewhere without that context is weaker.
Distinguish promotional screenshots from player captures
“Official” can refer to different things. A publisher may distribute a promotional screenshot through a press kit, while a player may create a genuine capture while playing the game. The latter can be an authentic image of gameplay without being an official promotional asset.

Publishers may also set rules specifically for player-made captures. KONAMI’s GRADIUS ORIGINS Video and Screenshot Posting Guidelines, revised July 1, 2026, address screenshots of games played by users. Larian’s press page, by contrast, provides press assets. Identify which category you are assessing before describing an image.
Use visual clues only as leads
A watermark, unusual framing, polished lighting, or a visible user interface may suggest where to look next, but none is a reliable authenticity test by itself. The official materials cited here do not establish a universal visual fingerprint that separates official images from fan-made ones. Do not assign authorship or allege manipulation based only on how an image looks.

An image may have been cropped, edited, upscaled, or reposted. Without a traceable primary-source match or other reliable evidence, visual inspection cannot settle those possibilities. State what you can verify and leave the rest uncertain.
Compare candidate images without overstating the result

Check reuse permission separately
Finding an image in an official source answers a provenance question, not a licensing question. Rights holders set different conditions for press-kit assets and player captures, so check the current terms for the specific game and intended use.

Gaijin Entertainment’s press-kit guidelines, last updated August 14, 2025, say that press-kit materials generally may not be modified except for technical adjustments that preserve visual and contextual integrity. KONAMI’s GRADIUS ORIGINS guidelines prohibit posting screenshots created by third parties without permission. These are examples of particular rights holders’ terms, not universal rules.
For an image whose source remains unclear, a cautious description is “source unverified.” For an image you have matched to an official asset, identify the source accurately, then review its reuse conditions before publishing or modifying it.
