“Physical” does not always mean the full game is on a cartridge. A Switch 2 package may contain a regular game card, a game-key card that unlocks a download, or only a download code. Check the exact game’s packaging before buying, then match its storage requirement against the space available on your console or a compatible microSD Express card.
What are the physical Nintendo Switch 2 game formats?
Look for the format specified for the exact release rather than relying on the word “physical.” Nintendo says some publishers sell Switch 2 Edition games in physical packaging as download codes without a game card. A game-key card is a card, but it does not contain the full game data.

Nintendo explains game-key cards and notes in its Switch 2 FAQ that some physical packages contain download codes instead of cards. The title’s own packaging or listing is the best guide to what you will receive.
Does a physical Switch 2 game need to be downloaded?
Regular game card
A regular game card is the physical game medium. However, a card does not guarantee that you will never need to download an update or additional data. Check the package’s storage information for the specific game.

Game-key card
A game-key card requires an internet connection and enough free storage for the initial game download. Nintendo says, “An internet connection is only required when you launch the game for the first time.” That applies after the download: you still need to insert the game-key card to play.
Code-only physical package
A package containing a download code does not include a game card. You must redeem the code and download the game, so confirm the game’s storage requirement and that you have enough space before buying.

Do you need a microSD Express card?
Not necessarily. Nintendo lists Switch 2 system storage as 256 GB, with some of that capacity reserved for console use, so the usable space is lower. Whether you need more depends on the games you choose and the free space remaining on your console. Nintendo says storage requirements vary by game and that no individual game currently requires extra storage to play.
Check the physical package for a physical release or the Nintendo eShop listing for a digital release. Then compare the requirement with your available space in System Settings → Data Management. Nintendo’s Data Management guidance explains where to find storage information.

If you want more room, Switch 2 uses microSD Express cards for storing or loading digital games. Standard microSD cards from the original Switch cannot be used for that purpose on Switch 2. Nintendo supports microSD Express cards up to 2 TB; its microSD Express FAQ also says an internet system update is required the first time you use one.
- Check the exact game’s storage requirement before purchase.
- Confirm the card is explicitly labeled microSD Express, not just microSD.
- Choose a capacity within Nintendo’s stated limit of up to 2 TB.
- Remember that extra card space does not move save data off the console.
Where is Switch 2 save data stored?
Save data stays in the console’s system memory whether you play from a game card or from a download. It cannot be copied to a microSD Express card. A card can hold downloaded software, updates, DLC, screenshots, and video, but not game saves.

Nintendo says deleting downloaded software does not delete its save data. If you download that software again, you can resume using the existing save. See Nintendo’s save-data FAQ.
