To set up a racing wheel for a Steam game, connect and configure the wheel using its manufacturer’s instructions, then bind and test steering, pedals, and buttons in the game’s own control settings. Steam is usually where you launch the game—not a universal racing-wheel remapper—and compatibility depends on the specific wheel and game.
Before you connect the wheel
Check the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact wheel model and confirm that it supports your operating system and the game you want to play. Check how the wheel, pedals, USB cable, and power supply must be connected; arrangements differ between models. A game being available on Steam does not by itself mean that it supports your wheel.
If the manufacturer requires a driver or configuration app, install it before troubleshooting in a game. For example, Logitech lists G HUB for the G923 on PC. Its stated requirements and setup apply to that model, not to every racing wheel: Logitech G923 specifications.
Connect the wheel and check that the PC recognizes it
- Connect the pedals to the wheel and connect the wheel to the PC and power as instructed for your model.
- Install or open the manufacturer’s driver or configuration software if required. Use its input display, if available, to check whether steering, pedals, and buttons register.
- Allow any startup calibration to finish. Logitech says the G923 rotates fully to each side and returns to center after connection; other wheels may calibrate differently.

Map steering, pedals, and buttons in the game
- Launch the game from Steam and open the game’s control, input, or wheel settings. The wording and menu location vary by title.
- Select the wheel as the input device if the game offers that choice, then assign steering, throttle, brake, clutch, and buttons individually as needed.
- Move or press each control when prompted. Check the game’s input indicator or calibration screen to confirm each assignment responds and moves in the expected direction.
- Save the settings, then test the controls in a safe menu, practice session, or other low-risk area before a race.
Steamworks developer guidance says that games with racing-wheel support should disable Generic/DirectInput remapping because Steam does not support remapping those devices: Valve’s Steam Input gamepad-emulation guidance. Steam Input supports controller configurations and translation modes, but that should not be mistaken for a universal tool for assigning racing-wheel axes and pedals. Use the game’s wheel options for the bindings.
Adjust steering rotation and force feedback
Rotation range and force-feedback behavior are often configured per game, and the available options depend on both the wheel and title. Start with instructions for your exact combination, then adjust to your preference. Do not assume a suggested steering angle or force-feedback value for one model or game is right for another. Logitech’s Pro Wheel recommendations, for example, describe title-specific compatibility modes, force-feedback filters, and steering-angle settings: Logitech Pro Wheel in-game settings.

Troubleshoot a wheel or control the game does not detect
The game does not detect the wheel
- Recheck the power supply, USB cable, and any required connections between the pedals and wheel.
- Confirm that the maker’s software or driver is installed when required, and check whether the device appears and registers inputs there.
- Check operating-system recognition before changing game bindings. Logitech’s G923/G29/G920 connection guide describes using G HUB and Windows’ controller module to check recognition and inputs: Logitech connection troubleshooting.
- Once the PC recognizes the wheel, return to the game’s input settings and select or bind it there.
The wheel works, but a pedal or button does not
Check that control’s assignment in the game and verify the corresponding connection. A wheel being detected does not guarantee that every pedal or button has been mapped.
A pedal responds in the wrong direction
Check the game’s axis indicator and pedal-inversion option. Logitech notes that some games may invert pedal controls; change the setting only if the displayed input or in-game behavior confirms the direction is wrong.

Advanced connection fixes
Some manufacturer troubleshooting guides include advanced operating-system changes. Do not start by editing the Windows registry: Logitech labels that material as advanced in its connection guidance. First check the physical connections, required software, device recognition, and game-side bindings.
