Compatibility is game-specific: Steam Input’s documented device support is for gamepads, not a guarantee that racing wheels will work in every title.
Controller or wheel: which is the better starting point?

These are practical recommendations based on platform and game documentation, not controlled comparisons of lap times, accuracy, comfort or learning speed.
Why Steam Input does not settle wheel compatibility
Steam Input can help configure supported gamepads, but its device list should not be read as a universal compatibility list for racing wheels. Valve’s developer guidance specifically advises games with racing-wheel support to exclude Generic/DirectInput controllers from Steam Input remapping: Steam does not support remapping those devices in that way. Valve’s guidance for developers distinguishes that gamepad remapping from a game’s own wheel support.
In practice, a wheel working in one Steam racer does not establish that it will work in another. Look for support for the exact wheel and platform, and for details on drivers, bindings and force feedback. A game may support both control types yet still recommend a wheel for its intended driving experience, as Kart Racing Pro does.

Check wheel support before buying or troubleshooting
- Check the exact game and platform. Read the current Steam store page and the developer’s support notes for the title you plan to play.
- Verify the wheel model and requirements. Look for the specific model, any driver or firmware needs, and whether the game supports force feedback.
- Follow the game’s setup instructions. Check whether the developer recommends connecting the wheel before launch and whether Steam Input should be enabled or disabled for that title.
- If it is not recognized, check the physical connections and driver status, then try the game’s custom binding options if available.
These steps reflect the approach in Simteract’s June 17, 2024 Taxi Life PC wheel-support announcement; they are not universal instructions for every game. Simteract advised connecting the wheel before launching Taxi Life, checking connections and drivers, and using custom bindings if needed. For that game, it also advised restarting if force feedback was missing.
What the Logitech G29 example does—and does not—show
Simteract included the Logitech G29 Driving Force on Taxi Life’s approved and tested PC wheel list in that June 17, 2024 announcement. It is a concrete example of a wheel supported by that game’s PC implementation, not evidence that the G29 works with every Steam racing game. Check current instructions for the game you intend to play.

How much weight should you give Steam Input’s usage statistic?
Valve’s developer documentation reports that roughly a quarter of Steam controller sessions in 2020 used Steam Input, including nearly half of PlayStation controller sessions. The statistic is from Valve’s 2020 reporting: it is not a current adoption estimate, a measure of wheel use, or evidence that either device improves racing performance.
