A blurry PS5 picture and a flickering or dropping signal are different problems, so start by checking what resolution the console is sending and whether the HDMI connection is stable. PS5 AI upscaling is not a universal sharpness setting: Sony’s Enhance PSSR Image Quality option is limited to CFI-7000 model-group consoles and compatible games.
First, identify what is wrong with the picture
Note whether the image is consistently soft, the output resolution is lower than expected, the screen flickers, the signal cuts out, or the picture is cropped. These symptoms point to different checks: resolution and game compatibility for softness; signal bandwidth and the HDMI path for flicker or dropouts; and the display-area setting for cropping.
Check the PS5’s output resolution
- Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Review Current Video Output Signal and the connected HDMI device information, including resolution, VRR, and HDR.
- Check Resolution. With Automatic, the PS5 selects the highest resolution it detects the TV supports. On a compatible 4K display, 2160p is the 4K output setting; you can select it under Resolution.
The reported signal is what the console sends, not a guarantee that every game renders internally at that resolution or that every part of the setup can display it as intended. Sony notes that the picture depends on the complete home entertainment setup. Check the display’s manual and any receiver or other device in the signal path if its supported formats are unclear. If the picture flickers, reduce the signal transfer rate
In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, set Video Transfer Rate to -1 or -2. Sony recommends these options when the screen flickers; they limit the 4K output signal and may improve picture stability.

This is a trade-off, not a free image-quality boost: limiting the signal can disable some high-bandwidth output modes, including 4K/120 Hz and selected 4K 50/60 Hz color formats. If the picture stabilizes, test whether the output features you need still work before settling on the setting. Sony’s guidance on Video Transfer Rate and supported output.
Check the HDMI connection and remove intermediaries
- Confirm the HDMI cable is firmly seated at both the PS5 and display.
- Try another HDMI port on the display. If you have another suitable cable, test it as well.
- Connect the PS5 directly to the display, temporarily bypassing a receiver, soundbar, capture device, or other intermediary.
- Check the display manual for any setting required to accept high-resolution signals, and install current display firmware.
Sony recommends the cable supplied with the console for its high-performance features. For 4K/120 Hz, use that cable or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for the output. Consider replacing a cable only if it is faulty or unsuitable; a new cable will not fix softness caused by a game’s rendering or an unsupported display resolution. If there is no image at all, Sony’s troubleshooting procedure is to turn off both the display and console, disconnect their power cables, wait 20 minutes, reconnect them, and check again. This is a no-image troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed remedy for blur or flicker. If the problem persists, contact PlayStation Repairs.
Change VRR or 120 Hz only if the symptom fits
Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) adjusts refresh rate in real time, but it requires support from both the display and game, and results vary by TV. Change one setting at a time so you can tell whether it affects the problem.

- If video output problems occur with 120 Hz games on a monitor or another display, turn off 120 Hz Output in Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- If enabling Apply to Unsupported Games causes unexpected behavior, turn that option off.

Use PSSR only on supported PS5 Pro games
PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) is not available as a general sharpness control on every PS5. Sony lists Enhance PSSR Image Quality for consoles in the CFI-7000 model group and certain PSSR-compatible games. It is on by default. Find it under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Enhance PSSR Image Quality; turn it off if gameplay behaves unexpectedly. It may improve image quality in supported games, but it is not a guaranteed fix for softness in every game.

For PS4 games played on PS5 Pro, Sony provides a separate Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games setting. Sony advises checking that the display supports 2160p/60 Hz or 1440p/60 Hz output and turning the setting off if unexpected gameplay behavior occurs. For a picture that is cut off at the edges or surrounded by a border, open Settings > Screen and Video > Screen > Adjust Display Area and follow the on-screen adjustment. This setting addresses picture size and placement, not blur. Sony’s display-area instructions.

What to try based on the symptom

Menu wording and feature availability can change with system software, and display compatibility varies. Update the console and consult the display manual if the reported output or available options do not match your setup.
