Sony’s newly announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) is an AI upscaling option for standard PlayStation 5. Sony says it analyzes game images pixel by pixel and aims to add detail and improve image stability. The announcement names Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games to offer it, but provides no benchmark results or quantified image or frame-rate gains.
What is QSSR on PS5?
Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR, is Sony’s announced AI-upscaling technology for PS5. It is intended to reconstruct an output image from game-image data, with the goal of showing more detail than conventional approaches while keeping the image stable. Sony describes it as an optional graphics feature in supported games, not a system-wide setting that automatically applies to every PS5 title.
Sony’s Daniel Craig, Principal Engineer, Graphics R&D, says: “PSSR analyzes game images pixel by pixel and uses AI to upscale them with more detail and stability than conventional approaches; until now, its computational demands made bringing that experience to PS5 impossible.” The statement explains the motivation for QSSR, but it is Sony’s description rather than a quantified or independently verified comparison.
How does Sony say QSSR works?
Sony says QSSR uses a streamlined neural network and an implementation hand-tuned for PS5 performance. Its stated process analyzes game images pixel by pixel and upscales them. The October 1, 2026 announcement does not disclose the model architecture, the resolution being rendered internally, the output resolution, or detailed implementation behavior, so those specifics cannot be inferred from the description.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What might QSSR improve?
Sony’s stated targets are more image detail and improved stability. In practice, those are qualities players can assess by looking for clearer fine elements and less distracting instability in moving or detailed scenes. They are intended benefits, not results established by published measurements.
The announcement does not quantify changes to shimmering, flicker, or other artifacts, and it does not report a title-specific frame-rate effect. Upscaling is not a guarantee that every scene will look sharper or that performance will improve: the result depends on how a supported game implements the option and on its own graphics settings. Sony has not supplied results that settle those questions for QSSR.

Which PS5 games support QSSR?
Sony identifies Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games patched to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5. Sony also says the library will be offered broadly to PlayStation developers. That signals developer availability, not a promise that every PS5 game will add QSSR; the announcement does not provide a complete support list.
How is QSSR different from PS5 Pro’s PSSR?
Sony positions QSSR as a new performance tier of AI upscaling for PS5 and calls PSSR the “gold standard” on PS5 Pro. This is Sony’s characterization, not a controlled, like-for-like comparison. The announcement includes no numerical benchmarks showing how the technologies compare in image quality, resolution, or performance.

How to judge QSSR in a supported game
When a game offers QSSR as a graphics option, a useful comparison is the same scene with the option enabled and disabled. Keep the game’s other graphics settings and display/output settings unchanged, and note the console model and game patch. Look separately at still details and details in motion, then watch for image stability, shimmer or flicker, and changes in frame-rate behavior. This is a way to evaluate the feature in your own game; Sony has not published results for these comparisons.
