On supported CFI-7000 model group PS5 consoles, the relevant setting is Enhance PSSR Image Quality, found at Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. It is on by default, so you usually do not need to turn anything on. Sony says it affects certain PSSR-compatible games, not every game or every PS5 model. Sony’s PS5 resolution guide identifies PSSR as PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution.
Where to find the PS5 AI upscaling setting
- On a supported CFI-7000 model group console, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Select Enhance PSSR Image Quality. Sony says it is on by default; turn it off in this menu if you want to compare the image without the feature.
- Check whether the game supports PSSR. The setting is not a universal upscaling switch for every game, and Sony’s support documentation does not say that it applies to every PS5 console model.
Sony describes the option as an image-quality setting for certain PSSR-compatible games. It does not promise a specific resolution or frame-rate increase. Avoid assuming that changing this control will improve every game in the same way.
Should you change resolution for better upscaling?
Resolution is a separate choice from PSSR. With Resolution set to Automatic, the PS5 selects the highest resolution supported by the connected TV. A manual output may make sense when you are checking a display’s capabilities or prefer a particular supported mode, but it does not turn PSSR on.
If your display supports 1440p, use Test 1440p Output in the Video Output settings to check the available combinations. Sony says the test can cover SDR or HDR at 60 Hz or 120 Hz and VRR, depending on what the connected TV supports. Sony also notes that a game rendered at a higher native resolution, such as 4K, may benefit from improved anti-aliasing when supersampled down to 1440p output. This is a distinct potential benefit of 1440p output, not the PSSR setting.

How VRR, 120 Hz, ALLM, and HDR relate to PSSR
These options affect display output, motion handling, latency, or dynamic range; they do not enable PSSR. Choose among them based on your display and game rather than treating them as upscaling controls.

There is no universal best combination: supported resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and VRR depend on the display and game. If your priority is smoothness or latency, check which modes both support; if your priority is image output, compare the available resolutions and HDR behavior on your display.

If Enhance PSSR Image Quality is missing
- Confirm the console model. Sony lists the PSSR image-quality option for supported CFI-7000 model group consoles; do not assume it is available on all PS5 models.
- Check game compatibility. The setting applies to certain compatible games, not all titles.
- Check the display and HDMI chain. Review the TV or monitor’s supported modes, the PS5’s connected HDMI device information, and any receiver or switch between the console and display.
- Test output modes. If you are checking 1440p, run Test 1440p Output to see which supported combinations are available.
If the image flickers, Sony recommends trying Video Transfer Rate at -1 or -2 to limit the transfer rate. That can restrict some output combinations; it is signal troubleshooting, not an upscaling improvement.
For ALLM compatibility, Sony recommends the included PS5 HDMI cable and says an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable supporting HDMI 2.1 should also support ALLM. Replacing a cable is conditional troubleshooting for display-signal compatibility, not a way to activate PSSR. See Sony’s full resolution and video-output guidance for the available controls.
