Native rendering avoids the upscaling step, but AI upscaling can produce a convincing image from a lower-resolution render while leaving more GPU time for frame rate or other visual features. Compare the same game mode in motion—not just its 4K output label.
What “native” and “upscaled” mean on PS5
Internal resolution is the resolution at which a game renders before reconstruction. Output resolution is the image sent to your display after any upscaling. A game can output 4K without rendering every pixel at native 4K; its internal resolution may also change dynamically as the scene’s demands shift.
Native resolution means the game renders at the stated output resolution without an upscaler reconstructing missing output pixels. It does not mean the image is otherwise untouched, or that it will look sharper in every scene.
What PSSR does
PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is Sony’s AI-based upscaling feature for PS5 Pro. Sony describes it as a library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel during upscaling. In March 2026, Sony said an updated version improved stability, fine-detail clarity, and performance consistency in supported games; those are Sony’s claims about supported titles, not a guarantee for every game. QSSR and PS5 support
On October 1, 2026, Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), describing it as an AI-upscaling performance tier coming to PS5. Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as its first titles. The announcement does not establish final rollout status, in-game options, or broader game support, so check a game’s current release notes rather than assuming QSSR is available in a particular title. Why neither approach always looks better
Native rendering avoids reconstruction, but rendering at a higher internal resolution takes GPU resources. A developer can instead render at a lower or variable resolution, upscale the image, and use the saved resources for frame rate, ray tracing, lighting, or other detail. The resulting trade-off depends on the game’s implementation and the scene.

Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows explanation uses 1080p upscaled to 2160p as an example and notes that lowering render resolution can improve frame rate at the cost of clarity, with possible artifacts. It also explains that dynamic resolution adjusts render resolution as GPU demand changes. This illustrates the trade-off; it is not a recommended setting or universal PS5 rule. How to compare image quality in a game
- Compare the same game and mode. Performance, Fidelity, and enhanced modes can change resolution, frame rate, ray tracing, and other settings together. Their labels are not standardized between games.
- Watch fine detail while moving. Pan the camera and look for shimmer, flicker, trails, breakup, or unstable geometry. A still image may not reveal how reconstruction behaves in motion.
- Check internal resolution and scaling behavior. An output-resolution label does not tell you the render resolution. Dynamic resolution can vary with GPU demand, and stronger hardware may use a higher base resolution while still adjusting it to protect frame rate.
- Weigh performance and visual features alongside sharpness. A mode that looks slightly softer may target a higher frame rate or add other effects. Compare measured or clearly documented performance rather than assuming the sharpest-looking mode is the best overall.
- Keep the viewing conditions consistent. Use the same display, output resolution, viewing distance, and display settings for both modes. Sony says PS5 Pro enhancements vary by game and require a compatible display. Sony’s PS5 Pro overview

Examples from Sony and developers show why a console-wide verdict is misleading: games can combine resolution, upscaling, and performance differently.

- Saros: Housemarque says the PS5 Pro version raises its base render resolution before upscaling and still uses dynamic resolution to keep frame rate stable. The studio describes the Pro image as sharper in scene-to-scene comparisons. Its claim that upgraded PSSR makes the image difficult to distinguish from native 4K is specific to Saros and is a developer statement, not an independent test. Housemarque’s Saros feature article
- Naughty Dog’s PS5 Pro mode example: Sony’s 2024 developer overview described a mode rendering at 1440p, upscaling to 4K with PSSR, and targeting 60 fps. It is a game-specific example, not a PS5 Pro specification or a promise about other modes. Sony’s developer overview
Sony reported on February 27, 2026, that PSSR had been used to boost effective resolution in more than 50 titles. That count indicates adoption, not the quality or internal resolution of any particular game. Sony’s announcement about the upgraded PSSR
