Sony’s new Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) is AI upscaling for the standard PS5; PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is the established upscaling technology for PS5 Pro. Sony describes QSSR as a streamlined, hand-tuned implementation designed to maximize performance on PS5, while calling PSSR the gold standard on PS5 Pro. That makes them different tiers for different consoles—not interchangeable settings, and not a proven image-quality contest.

Sony has not published a controlled, same-scene comparison that establishes a universal image-quality winner or quantifies the performance gap between the two technologies. Its descriptions identify different implementation goals and platforms, not matching reconstruction quality or computational cost. Sony’s QSSR announcement and March 2026’s PSSR update are the basis for the comparison.
What QSSR changes on standard PS5
QSSR is Sony’s newly announced AI upscaling library for PS5. Sony says its streamlined neural-network architecture and hand-tuned implementation are intended to make the feature work with the console’s performance constraints. The aim, according to Sony, is to improve image detail and stability without presenting QSSR as the same implementation as PS5 Pro’s PSSR.
The first named QSSR games are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei, where Sony says it will be offered as an additional graphics option. Insomniac Games technology head Mike Fitzgerald said QSSR adds pixel-level clarity and stability in environments such as Madripoor and Shinjuku. Sucker Punch lead rendering engineer Jasmin Patry said it resolves fine character and environmental details with temporal stability not previously possible on PS5. Those are developer impressions, not results from independent controlled tests. Sony says the library will be available broadly to PlayStation developers, but support remains a game-by-game decision.

What PSSR does on PS5 Pro
PSSR is Sony’s upscaling feature for PS5 Pro. Sony describes it as examining each game image pixel by pixel as it upscales. In March 2026, Sony announced an upgraded PSSR intended to improve image stability, clarity in fine details, and consistency across supported titles. The company said PSSR had been used to boost effective resolution in more than 50 PS5 Pro games at the time of that announcement; that is a dated figure, not a current total.
For PS5 Pro games that already support PSSR, Sony said players could try the upgraded version by selecting Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Enhance PSSR Image Quality. Sony cautions that results vary by title, so the setting should not be treated as a guaranteed improvement in every game.

Which one will look better?
The available Sony material does not establish that QSSR or PSSR always produces the sharper, steadier, or more pleasing image. The features target different consoles, and the outcome depends on how each game implements upscaling and which graphics options it offers. Sony’s description of PSSR as the PS5 Pro gold standard is a positioning statement, not a controlled head-to-head result against QSSR.
For a practical comparison, check whether a particular game supports the feature on your console, then compare its available graphics modes on your own display. Look for fine textures, edges, and motion stability in scenes you can revisit. A game may make the trade-off between image detail and performance differently from another; the feature name alone does not tell you which mode will suit you.

What this means if you are choosing a console
PSSR is a PS5 Pro feature, so PS5 Pro is the direct route to games that use it. QSSR brings Sony’s newer AI-upscaling option to standard PS5, but it does not mean every existing or future PS5 game will support it. Sony’s PS5 Pro product page also notes that results vary by title.
When weighing the consoles, consider the games you actually play and whether those specific titles support the relevant feature. Sony’s announcements do not show that QSSR makes standard PS5 equivalent to PS5 Pro, nor do they establish that every player will notice an improvement. Support and visual results are title-dependent.
