Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) for base PS5 on October 1, 2026. The first games Sony named are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei, where QSSR is an additional graphics option. The Pro still has its own upscaler, PSSR, plus game-dependent graphics and performance enhancements.
What QSSR changes on the base PS5
QSSR is Sony’s AI-guided upscaling technology for base PS5. Sony describes it as a streamlined neural-network implementation designed for the console, intended to improve detail and image stability. In supported games, upscaling reconstructs an image at a higher effective resolution than its underlying render; it does not by itself guarantee a higher frame rate or a particular image quality.
Sony’s October 1, 2026 announcement names Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games to offer QSSR on base PS5, as an additional graphics option. Sony says it plans to offer the technology broadly to developers, but that is not a promise that every game—or any specific future game—will support it. Check the graphics options for the games you actually play.
Sony quotes Insomniac Games technology head Mike Fitzgerald describing QSSR as adding “more pixel-level clarity and stability” in Marvel’s Wolverine. Sucker Punch rendering engineer Jasmin Patry says it resolves fine detail with temporal stability on PS5. How QSSR compares with PS5 Pro’s PSSR
PS5 Pro uses PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). Sony describes PSSR as analyzing game images pixel by pixel as it upscales them, and positions it as the higher-performance “gold standard” compared with QSSR on base PS5. On February 27, 2026, PlayStation lead architect Mark Cerny said PSSR had been used to boost effective resolution in more than 50 PS5 Pro titles; he also announced a more advanced version first used in Resident Evil Requiem. Sony’s PS5 Pro product page lists over 100 PS5 titles enhanced for Pro. That is a live Sony catalog figure, accessed October 4, 2026, rather than a fixed independent count; the exact supported list can change. Sony says compatible games can combine AI-enhanced 4K output, ray tracing, and 60 fps or up to 120 fps, but the available mix depends on each game and display. What game examples show—and what they do not
Saros: different rendering approaches
In an April 16, 2026 developer account, Housemarque says Saros runs at 60 fps on base PS5. For PS5 Pro, the studio says it raised base render resolution before upscaling, targets 60 fps during play using dynamic resolution, and adjusted reflections and overall quality. Cyberpunk 2077: modes depend on display support
CD Projekt Red’s April 7, 2026 update describes PSSR and ray-traced lighting, shadows, and reflections on PS5 Pro. Its three modes have distinct targets: Ray Tracing Pro targets 40 fps on high-frame-rate displays with VRR, or 30 fps otherwise; Performance reaches up to 90 fps on VRR displays; Ray Tracing targets 60 fps. These are the developer’s targets for Cyberpunk 2077, not a promise of identical results in other games or on displays without the specified support. Which console should you buy?
Choose base PS5 if
- The local price difference matters more to you than Pro-specific or Pro-enhanced presentation.
- The games you play offer the image or performance modes you want on base PS5, including QSSR where supported.
- You are comfortable evaluating QSSR title by title rather than assuming it applies across the catalog.
Choose PS5 Pro if
- You want the strongest supported image quality and more options for ray tracing or higher frame rates in compatible games.
- The titles you play are on Sony’s enhanced list and their Pro modes are worth the price difference to you.
- Your display and play habits make the relevant resolution, refresh-rate, or VRR features useful.
There is no evidence-based universal value winner without knowing your region, console configuration, game list, and display. Compare the modes for those games, then weigh their benefits against the actual local price gap.
