If your OLED gaming monitor flickers only while a game is running with variable refresh rate (VRR) enabled, first turn VRR off temporarily and test the same scene. If the flicker stops, the symptom likely tracks VRR, frame-time changes, or a game/driver/display compatibility issue—not necessarily a defective panel. If it continues, investigate the signal path and monitor settings instead.
VRR can be enabled or disabled at more than one layer: in the monitor’s on-screen menu, Windows, and your graphics driver. A single switch may not turn it off everywhere. Use the steps below to isolate the cause before deciding whether to leave VRR disabled or contact the monitor maker.
First, identify when and how the flicker happens
Before changing settings, note what the symptom looks like and when it appears. Brightness or gamma pulsing during gameplay points you toward a different investigation than a momentary black screen or visible tearing. This is a useful troubleshooting distinction, not a definitive diagnosis: the symptom alone does not identify a cause.
- Does it happen only in one game, or also on the desktop and in the monitor’s own menus?
- Does it coincide with loading screens, menus, frame-rate drops, or unstable performance?
- Does it happen with HDR on, with a particular display mode, or only through one cable or port?
- Is the symptom pulsing brightness, a brief blackout or signal loss, or tearing?
Test whether VRR is involved
VRR matches the display’s refresh behavior to the game’s frame rate. That can reduce tearing and stutter, but flicker can occur when frame timing is erratic or frames are dropped. RTINGS describes a controlled DirectX test that varies frame times and measures brightness; its discussion covers six OLED monitors, a test cohort rather than a statistic about all OLED displays. See RTINGS’ VRR flicker testing discussion.

- Open the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD) and temporarily disable its VRR, Adaptive-Sync, FreeSync, or G-SYNC control, using the label available on your model.
- Repeat the same game, scene, and display mode. Keep other settings unchanged so the comparison is useful.
- If the flicker remains, also check the Windows graphics settings and your GPU control panel. Turning off Windows VRR alone may not disable driver-level sync: MSI specifically notes this for NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel graphics. Its guidance is for MSI notebooks, so check the controls available on your own system. MSI’s VRR troubleshooting guidance.
- If turning VRR off stops the flicker, update the GPU driver and monitor firmware, then re-enable VRR and change one model-specific setting at a time. Test both fullscreen and windowed modes if the problem is limited to one game.
Disabling VRR is an isolation test, not automatically the best permanent setting: tearing may return. The result shows that the symptom tracks VRR use, but does not by itself distinguish among game behavior, driver configuration, monitor compatibility, or firmware.
Check the sync settings for your graphics card
NVIDIA: inspect G-SYNC
Open NVIDIA Control Panel > Display > Set up G-SYNC and review the options for the display you are testing. NVIDIA’s setup guidance covers enabling G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible, selecting fullscreen or windowed-and-fullscreen operation, enabling the setting for the selected display, configuring the display as enabled and primary, and choosing G-SYNC/G-SYNC Compatible under Manage 3D Settings > Monitor Technology. The exact options depend on the display and system. NVIDIA says the display-specific control can also be used to test VRR on a display it has not validated as G-SYNC Compatible; enabling it is not a guarantee against flicker. NVIDIA’s G-SYNC setup instructions.

If flicker occurs only in one game, compare fullscreen with windowed mode. If it persists, temporarily disable G-SYNC to confirm whether the symptom changes, then check the monitor maker’s compatibility and firmware information. Dell advises disabling G-SYNC when it causes flicker on a monitor that is not G-SYNC Compatible; that recommendation is for Dell and Alienware products, not a complete compatibility list for every brand. Dell’s Alienware flicker guidance.
AMD: inspect FreeSync and monitor presets
In AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, open Display and check the active display’s FreeSync status or tier and reported range. AMD also documents per-game AMD Optimized, On, and Off choices. Certain monitor color or media presets, and some custom settings, can disable FreeSync; consult the manual for the exact display before changing a preset. AMD’s illustrated steps are based on Adrenalin Edition 23.9.1, and the page notes that menu availability can vary by system. The page was last updated March 3, 2025. If flicker continues with VRR off, check the signal and monitor
When the symptom persists with VRR disabled, work through ordinary signal and display checks. Use the monitor’s native resolution and a refresh rate supported by that specific model; install current graphics drivers and monitor firmware; and reseat the signal cable. If you have a compatible known-good cable, substitute it as a test. A cable problem is a plausible separate cause of flicker, but changing cables will not correct VRR flicker caused by unstable frame timing.
- Check that the selected resolution and refresh rate are supported by the monitor and connection.
- Reseat the cable at both ends and test another compatible, known-good cable if available.
- Update the GPU driver and check the monitor maker’s support page for firmware and model-specific troubleshooting.
- If the monitor has an overclock, disable it for testing. Dell also recommends disabling MRPT or ULMB modes when present; feature names and availability vary by display.
- Consider nearby electrical interference if the problem persists. This is among Dell’s suggested checks, not a universal explanation for flicker.
- Run the monitor’s built-in self-test or diagnostic, if its manual provides one.
These are manufacturer troubleshooting steps, not OLED-wide requirements. For example, the Alienware AW3423DWF manual specifies native 3440 × 1440 at 60 Hz or higher and includes checks such as disabling VRR/G-SYNC/FreeSync, updating drivers and firmware, changing the cable, and checking nearby electrical devices. Those resolution and control details apply to that model, not to OLED monitors generally. Alienware AW3423DWF user’s guide.

Choose the next step based on what changed
| Test result | What it suggests | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Flicker stops when VRR is fully disabled | The symptom tracks VRR use, but the test does not identify whether the cause is the game, frame timing, driver, display compatibility, or firmware. | Update GPU drivers and monitor firmware; re-enable VRR and test one relevant setting at a time. Keep VRR off only if its trade-off is acceptable. |
| Flicker continues with VRR disabled | VRR is not the only condition associated with the symptom. | Check native resolution and supported refresh rate, reseat or substitute the cable, update drivers and firmware, and run the monitor diagnostic. |
| Built-in self-test passes but flicker appears during normal use | Dell advises checking the rest of the system, including BIOS, graphics card, and drivers. | Check those components and repeat the test with another input or source if available. |
| Flicker appears in the monitor’s menus or persists across known-good inputs and cables | The symptom is not isolated to one game or cable in the tests performed; this alone does not establish a panel fault. | Use the manufacturer’s diagnostic and support process for the exact model. |
For product-specific instructions, use the manual and support page for your exact model. Monitor controls, VRR ranges, compatibility validation, and firmware remedies differ; no single setting applies to every OLED gaming monitor.
