Choose a 4K OLED gaming monitor by checking the mode your whole setup can actually use—not just the largest refresh-rate number on the box. Match the monitor’s resolution and refresh rate to your console or PC, connection, and the games you play. A 4K panel gives you 3840×2160 pixels; a higher refresh rate can show more frequent updates, but it does not make every game render at that rate.
What resolution and refresh rate tell you
Resolution is the number of pixels the display can show. A 4K UHD monitor has 3840×2160 pixels. Refresh rate, measured in hertz (Hz), is how often the display can update its image. These are separate specifications: a monitor can be 4K and 120 Hz, for example.
Higher resolution is most useful when you want the detail of a 4K image and your screen size and viewing distance make that detail worthwhile. Higher refresh rate matters when your device and a particular game can supply a faster-updating signal. It is not a guarantee of a matching in-game frame rate.
Start with the games and device you actually use
Before choosing a target, check what your console or PC supports, which modes the games you play offer, and whether the monitor can receive those modes through the connection you plan to use. The monitor’s maximum specification is only one part of the signal path.

If you play on PS5
Sony says PS5 supports HDMI 2.1 and 4K/120 Hz video output. The console detects connected display capabilities, and its 120 Hz output setting applies to supported displays and games; it does not mean every game renders at 120 frames per second. Sony also says VRR behavior depends on the display. Check the PS5 resolution and 4K/120 Hz guidance alongside the monitor’s specifications.
If you play on PC
Confirm that your graphics card’s output, the cable and monitor input, and the game’s settings support the resolution and refresh rate you want to use. The available sources do not establish universal PC hardware requirements or game-by-game performance, so check the specifications for your own components and games rather than assuming a particular GPU will achieve a specific frame rate.

Compare the modes, not just the headline number
When comparing monitors, look for the refresh rate available at the resolution you intend to use. Also check variable refresh rate (VRR), ports, and compatibility with your device. A high maximum rate listed for a different resolution or overclocked mode may not describe the mode you plan to play in.

These are specifications for two different products, not like-for-like test results. They illustrate that a 4K OLED monitor can be specified for 120 Hz with a higher overclocked mode, while a separate QHD IPS example lists up to 240 Hz. They do not establish that one configuration is best for every player.

Check VRR and the connection end to end
VRR adjusts the display’s refresh rate in real time to match the connected device’s output, according to PlayStation. To use it, confirm support across the device, display, connection, and game—not just in the monitor’s feature list. Sony notes that PS5 VRR results depend on the display.
For any target mode, verify the monitor’s input and the connection you will use can carry it, and check compatibility with your console or PC. If a receiver or other device sits between console and display, it is part of the signal path too.

If PS5 is not showing 4K/120 Hz
Sony’s troubleshooting guidance points to the display, HDMI port, cable, firmware, intermediary equipment, and console video settings. Check the signal path in this order:
- Confirm the display’s stated capability. Check that the specific monitor supports 4K/120 Hz, not merely 4K or 120 Hz separately.
- Use an appropriate HDMI port and cable. Sony recommends checking the display’s port and using the cable included with PS5 or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz. A new cable is not automatically necessary if the supplied one and existing path work.
- Check firmware and intermediary equipment. Update the display as appropriate, and connect the PS5 directly to it if a receiver or other intermediary may be limiting the signal.
- Review PS5 video settings. Check the console’s resolution and video-transfer-rate settings. Sony notes that changing transfer rate can limit some output modes.

A practical buying checklist
- Choose 4K if 3840×2160 detail suits the screen size, viewing distance, and games you play.
- Compare the refresh rate at the resolution you intend to use, not only the monitor’s highest advertised figure.
- Check whether the refresh-rate figure is a standard mode or an overclocked one.
- Confirm VRR support and compatibility across the display, device, connection, and games.
- For PS5, verify the HDMI port, cable, firmware, and any receiver or other intermediary support the mode you want.
- For PC, check the graphics-card output and game settings against the monitor mode; do not infer performance from the monitor specification alone.
- Recheck regional specifications on the manufacturer’s product page before buying; product details and availability can change.
