Start playing the show or film, open the playback controls, then choose Subtitles, Captions, or Audio & Subtitles and select a track listed for that title. The exact control depends on the app and device; if a language is not offered in the menu, it cannot be selected for that video from the playback screen.
Find the subtitle menu while the video is playing
In most streaming apps, subtitle and language choices are inside the video’s playback controls—not in the device’s home-screen settings. Start the video and reveal the controls using the screen, keyboard, or remote. Look for a speech-bubble, settings, or audio/subtitle control, then choose the track you want.
Use the label the app provides. Subtitles commonly show dialogue, often in another language; captions or closed captions may also describe sounds. Labels and distinctions vary by service, so choose the track that best matches your need. An alternate audio track changes the spoken language; it is not a subtitle. Audio description is a separate narration track that describes scenes.
Service-by-service steps
Netflix
- Start the show or film.
- On a phone, tablet, or computer, tap or click the video to reveal controls. On many TVs and connected players, use the remote’s up or down control; Netflix’s instructions for Apple TV use a swipe up or up-arrow action.
- Choose Audio & Subtitles, then select an available subtitle, caption, or audio track.
The menu shows languages available for that title. For downloaded titles, Netflix displays the two most relevant languages. Netflix’s subtitle and audio instructions cover device-specific controls.

Prime Video
- Start a supported title and open the playback controls. On some devices, tap the screen first to reveal them.
- Choose the Closed Caption or Subtitles control and select a listed track.
- To change spoken language, open the playback controls’ alternative-audio options and choose a listed track. A track marked [Audio Descriptions] includes narration describing scenes.
Some connected devices may require choosing a subtitle language before playback, and device support and appearance controls vary. See Prime Video’s guidance for captions, alternative audio and audio descriptions, and subtitles on smart TVs.
Disney+
- While the video is playing, open the keyboard/settings icon. On web and mobile it is at the top right; on TV-connected devices it is at the bottom right, though some TVs may show a three-dot icon.
- Choose an available audio language, subtitle, or closed-caption track.
- If the version you want is not listed, try changing the app language and check the available tracks again; this may expose a version if one exists for that language.
Disney+ says the available options vary by country or region and title. Its language guidance says audio and subtitle language can be changed while watching; its language troubleshooting guidance explains why options differ.

Apple TV app
- Open the playback controls and choose the Subtitles button.
- Turn subtitles on, then choose Languages to select another available track.
On Apple TV, a default subtitle language can be set at Settings > Video and Audio > Audio > Subtitle Language. This device-level default is documented for Apple TV; do not assume it changes preferences in other streaming apps or devices. See Apple’s instructions for subtitles and video languages.

- Check the specific title’s track list. Languages are title-dependent, not guaranteed across a whole service.
- Consider region and device support. Disney+ says options vary by country or region and title; Prime Video notes device support varies.
- For Disney+, try the app-language setting. A different app language may reveal an available version, but it cannot create a track that does not exist for the title.
- For a download on Netflix, check the displayed options. Downloaded titles show the two most relevant languages.
- Choose the right kind of track. Select captions when you need sound cues as well as dialogue, an alternate audio track for different spoken dialogue, or audio description for scene narration.
A missing option may reflect the title, region, or device rather than a setting you overlooked. The available choices in the playback menu are the choices you can select for that video.
