How to Watch a War Film with Subtitles on a TV Without Streaming Apps

A TV without built-in streaming apps can still play a subtitled war film. Check the TV inputs, choose a compatible source, and confirm the film and subtitle language are available.

You can watch a war film with subtitles on a TV that has no built-in streaming app by connecting a compatible external streaming player to the TV’s HDMI port, or by using another compatible source such as a computer, casting device, local video file, or disc player. The film must be available through your chosen source in your region, and its subtitle menu must offer the language you need.

Use an external streaming player

An HDMI streaming player or stick adds its own apps to a TV that can display an HDMI input. Roku’s setup guide describes connecting a player to HDMI, powering it, and selecting the matching TV input. Services such as Netflix support various streaming-device families, but check compatibility for your particular player and service.

  1. Check the TV: Look at its back or side for an unused HDMI port and note the input number or label.
  2. Connect and power the player: Plug it into the TV’s HDMI port and connect its power supply. If it fails to start or reports insufficient power, use the supplied wall adapter rather than relying on the TV’s USB port.
  3. Set up the player: Turn on the TV, select the HDMI input you used, and follow the on-screen instructions to connect to the internet and set up the player’s apps. Choose a player that supports the service you want to use.
  4. Confirm the film and language: Search the service for the film before settling in. Catalogs and subtitle languages can vary by title and region.
  5. Turn on subtitles: Start the film, open its playback controls, and choose Subtitles or CC, then select an available language. In the Apple TV app, Apple’s instructions are to open playback controls, choose Subtitles, and then choose Languages.

Netflix warns that its app may no longer be available on some TVs and streaming devices made before 2015. If an older device cannot install the service, check the service’s current support information for that exact model.

Other ways to get the film onto the TV

Route What it needs What to check
Computer connected to the TV A Mac, Windows PC, or Chromebook that can connect to a compatible TV input. Netflix supports playback at Netflix.com in a supported browser; Windows also has a Netflix app. Check the actual ports on both devices before buying or assuming a cable or adapter will work. Select the corresponding TV input and control playback from the computer.
Casting A compatible receiving device or TV and a source app or browser that supports casting. Google documents casting from Google Cast-enabled apps and Chrome. Confirm that the app permits casting this film and that subtitles remain available through playback controls. Ordinary Bluetooth is not the video-casting method described in Google’s guidance.
Local video file A compatible media player and a video file you can play. Roku Media Player supports USB playback on Roku models with a USB port, or playback from a local media server. Roku says supported formats vary by model, and DRM-protected content is not supported. For external subtitles, place an SRT or VTT file beside the video with the same base name, such as Film.mkv and Film.srt. For multiple languages, use language suffixes such as Film.eng.srt.
DVD or Blu-ray player A compatible disc player, a disc containing the film, and a TV input both devices can use. Check the player and disc menus for the subtitle-language option you need; availability depends on that particular disc and device.

Choose a route that fits your setup

Start with the TV’s available inputs, then consider what you already own. An HDMI player is a direct option when the TV has HDMI; a computer may avoid buying a separate player if its ports match the TV. Casting depends on compatible sender and receiver support, while a local file or disc requires the right playback equipment and content.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For any route, verify three things before relying on it: the source can play the specific film, the TV and source device can connect, and the desired subtitle language is offered. If the TV has no HDMI input, an HDMI streaming stick will not connect directly; what might work instead depends on the TV’s actual inputs and the available source device.

Fix common subtitle and connection problems

  • The subtitle language is missing: The service or title may not offer it. Roku notes that captions are available only when the service provider supplies them.
  • Changing Roku’s system caption setting had no effect: Some providers control captions inside their own app. Open that film’s playback menu and check its subtitle settings.
  • A Roku Media Player subtitle file does not appear: Confirm it is an SRT or VTT file, sits in the same folder as the video, and uses the same base filename.
  • The TV shows no picture from an HDMI player: Confirm the player has power and that the TV is set to the input matching the port in use. If the player is underpowered from a TV USB port, connect its proper power adapter.
